Not all crystal and mineral dealers are trying to scam you! Lots of us use the term “rare” because a mineral is -actually- rare. And lots of us use nice presentations for our high end specimens. But it’s important to be aware of what to look for in a “high end” specimen: Color, Transparency/Translucency, Luster, Crystal form/Definition, Condition (especially with respect to locality), and Aesthetics.

If you’re struggling and getting caught up in marketing traps in the crystal and mineral industry- think of it like the skincare and beauty industry.

I’ve been a long term lover of skincare and one thing that’s always bothered me are the vague terms and scarcity launches. As I went down the skincare rabbit hole, I discovered The Beauty Brains (completely unsolicited shout out) and after trying many products, I began navigating my way through the skincare industry’s confusing marketing world. To my surprise, I recognized so many similarities between our crystal and mineral world and the beauty industry.

I see so many new faces online now focusing almost exclusively on fluorite. I love it. A little back story: in 2022, my business partner Nancy (Nancy Hartley Parsons) and I started doing LIVE shows after we blew up on Etsy. That’s the beginning of The Crystalary. We moved from my tiny extra bedroom, to my extra downstairs office, eventually to an upstairs office down the street and finally to a brick and mortar. We left online LIVEs once we opened the brick and mortar because well… we didn’t have time anymore! And because of that, we left our focus that was primarily on fluorite.

But between late 2023 and maybe mid 2025 (correct me if I’m wrong), fluorite was king for The Crystalary. It’s heartwarming to see so many who now focus on our favorite mineral. Have you heard quartz being called "Beta Quartz"? It's not a metaphysical term, it's a real scientific phenomenon that occurs in quartz! ⁠

Beta quartz forms when quartz crystallizes above about 573°C (1,063°F). As it cools below that temperature, its crystal structure changes into ordinary alpha quartz, although the crystal can retain the distinctive shape associated with beta quartz.⁠

The specimens in the videos displaying this morphology have traditionally been labeled and marketed as “Beta Quartz,” but the name is not technically accurate. True β-quartz (Beta Quartz) is the high-temperature polymorph of SiO₂ and is not stable under ordinary surface conditions. ⁠

These Dalnegorsk crystals in the videos are better described as Cumberland-habit Quartz: ordinary low-temperature α-quartz (Alpha Quartz) whose greatly reduced prism faces produce a form resembling β-quartz. ⁠

AVAILABLE NOW under Iris Agate on our website! This is a natural Iris Agate slice displaying brilliant rainbow colors illuminated with transmitted light. At first glance, the agate may appear translucent white, cream, honey, or golden-orange, but when held in front of a strong light source, extremely fine layers within the chalcedony reveal vivid bands of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet.

Unlike the color play seen in minerals such as opal or labradorite, the rainbow effect in Iris Agate is produced by diffraction of light through exceptionally fine, closely spaced bands of chalcedony. When the spacing of these microscopic layers approaches the wavelengths of visible light, the agate acts somewhat like a natural diffraction grating, separating transmitted white light into spectral colors.
