For the first time in its entire history, the United States House of Representatives includes members with Native American, Native Alaskan, and Native Hawaiian heritage serving at the same time. This milestone occurred when lawmakers such as Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland — both Native American Representatives — served alongside Mary Peltola, the first Congress member with documented Native Alaskan ancestry, and Kai Kahele, a Native Hawaiian Representative, reflecting greater Indigenous representation in Congress.
This moment highlights growing diversity in the nation’s legislature and marks a significant step toward broader inclusion of Indigenous voices in federal policymaking. Having Native American, Native Alaskan, and Native Hawaiian members simultaneously serving in the House underscores historic progress in political representation for communities that have long been underrepresented at the highest levels of U.S. government.
