MEET THE HOST: Dru Thompson

Some of my earliest memories involve fabric, creativity, and making something with my hands.

For more than 30 years, fashion has been at the center of my life. I've worked as a fashion designer, sewing educator, wardrobe professional for film and television, and entrepreneur. Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of teaching hundreds of students, designing custom garments, working behind the scenes on productions, and helping people discover the confidence that comes from creating something themselves.

One thing I've always believed is that creativity is meant to be shared.

I wanted to help create a space where makers could come together—not to compete, but to celebrate. A place where someone wearing their very first handmade garment could stand proudly beside someone with decades of sewing experience. A place where creativity, craftsmanship, and community take center stage.

That's why I'm honored to bring the Frocktails experience to Cleveland and curate an evening that celebrates the incredible talent, passion, and creativity within our local sewing community.

No matter where you are in your sewing journey, I hope you leave feeling inspired, connected, and proud of what you've created.

Thank you for being part of this journey. I can't wait to celebrate with you.

See you at Cleveland Frocktails.

Cleveland Frocktails was created to celebrate the people behind the garments.

In a world of fast fashion, there's something extraordinary about wearing a piece you've designed, sewn, altered, or lovingly made with your own hands. Every stitch tells a story, every garment reflects creativity, and every maker deserves a space to celebrate their work.

That's why Cleveland Frocktails exists.

Inspired by the global Frocktails movement, we're bringing Northeast Ohio's sewing and fashion community together for an evening of style, connection, and inspiration. No matter where you are on your sewing journey - an experienced dressmaker, a fashion designer, a quilter, an upcycler, a student, or someone who has just completed your very first project, there's a place for you here.

This isn't about perfection or competition. It's about celebrating creativity, building community, and recognizing the artistry that goes into handmade fashion.

We believe the best conversations happen when creative people gather, share ideas, admire each other's work, and inspire one another to keep making.

This is the beginning of a new tradition for Cleveland's makers, and we're so excited to have you be part of it.

Frocktails is a social event created for people who sew and make their own clothing. It's essentially a fashion party where attendees wear garments they made themselves, enjoy cocktails or mocktails, socialize, take photos, and celebrate creativity.
The event began in Melbourne and has grown into an international movement, with independently organized events in cities around the world.

A typical Frocktails event includes:

Guests wearing handmade garments.
A cocktail-style social gathering.
Professional photography and photo backdrops.
Food and drinks.
Prizes, raffles, or giveaways.
Sponsor tables from fabric shops, pattern designers, sewing machine dealers, and sewing-related businesses.
Opportunities to meet other sewists and fashion enthusiasts.

What makes Frocktails unique is that it's less about a fashion show and more about celebrating the people who created the clothing. Everyone is both the designer and the model.

Today, Frocktails has been hosted in cities throughout Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, including Adelaide, Atlanta, Austin, Blue Mountains, Brisbane, Canberra, Cascadia (Pacific Northwest), Darwin, Dunedin, Los Angeles, Louisville, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Raleigh, Sydney, the Twin Cities (Minneapolis–Saint Paul), Wellington, and White River Junction.

Now, Cleveland is proud to join this growing international community, bringing the spirit of Frocktails to Northeast Ohio for the very first time.

Summer is always a season of movement — and this one has been no different. Reinvention, creativity, and making room for what’s next have been at the center of everything I’m building right now.

And this month, I’ve got a few things for you.

♻️ Upcycle Sewing Workshop Starts July 15th

If you’ve been wanting to push your sewing skills further and learn how to transform old garments into something fresh, wearable, and one-of-a-kind —

this is your chance.

My next Upcycle Sewing Workshop starts July 15th.

This class is perfect for those who already know the basics and are ready to get more creative with construction, design, and garment transformation.

Small group. Hands-on. Limited spots.

Hotter than July Sale

I’m making room for what’s next, which means special pricing all month long.

This month’s sale includes:
✨ Select Skirts
✨ Sewing Classes
✨ Special product discounts

If you’ve been thinking about booking a sewing session, sharpening your sewing skills, or adding something new to your wardrobe — now is the time.

✂️ My July Sewing Picks

A lot of you ask what tools I actually use and recommend — especially if you’re sewing at home or joining class.

So this month I’m featuring two of my favorite Amazon lists:

Must Have Sewing Essentials
My go-to basics for sewing, upcycling, and garment construction.

No JoAnn? No Problem
Alternative tools and supply sources to keep your projects moving this summer.

No matter what you find yourself enjoying this month -
These are tools worth keeping nearby.

Summer Style Tip

Before you buy into trends this summer, pay attention to the fabric.

What your clothes are made of matters just as much as how they look. The right fabric can keep you cool, comfortable, and polished in the heat.

☀️ Cotton
Breathable, soft, and absorbent. A summer staple that allows airflow and keeps you comfortable.

☀️ Linen
Lightweight, airy, and naturally cooling. Perfect for hot days because it dries quickly and doesn’t cling.

☀️ Rayon
Light and fluid with beautiful drape. Great when you want comfort without sacrificing movement and style.

The goal isn’t just to look good — it’s to feel good too.

Good style should work with your body, not against it.

As much as I love the summer, fall is looking amazing!

Behind the scenes, I’m building a few new things:

private intensives, creative business coaching, and a few special events I can’t wait to share.

Stay tuned.

Until then — stay cool, stay creative, and stay intentional.
