The Radioactive Coin & Exhibit Module pays homage to Madame Curie, whose work and discoveries were born of curiosity and relentlessness. She was the recipient of two Nobel Prizes: one for the discovery of radioactivity, and another for adding two new chemical elements to the periodic table. In collaboration with her husband, Pierre Curie, she shattered the shell of the atom and helped open our eyes to the subatomic universe. A master of patience and steady process, Madame Curie took on the task of measuring the intensity of mysterious rays and ultimately delivered a new way of discovering elements.

Adding Two New Elements to the Periodic Table - Madame Curie earned her second Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1911) for the isolation of the elements polonium and radium. Her studies of pitchblende ore and uranium revealed substances with radioactivity so strong that they could not be any of the known chemical elements. She named polonium after her native Poland, and radium after the Latin word radius, meaning “ray."

Shattering the Shell of the Atom - Madame Curie won her first Nobel Prize in Physics (1903) after discovering and coining the term, radioactivity. Using Pierre Curie's electrometer, she devised a new method for isolating elements. By measuring varying levels and identifying different types of radioactive emissions originating from within the atoms of various minerals, she helped to disprove the long-held belief that the atom was the smallest particle of matter. Her research offered the first glimpse into the subatomic world of electrons, protons, neutrons, and radioactive rays emitted from the nucleus.

"I don't think there is any deeper fulfillment that can capture a human heart than the feeling of an inventor seeing his ideas materialized." - Nikola Tesla

This one strikes a chord.... The COINCIDE collection is, at its core, evidence of an investigation and development process that gets my heart pumping. Coffee helps too. - Jason
