So, what’s with the name? Of all the options- R.C. Magnum’s is what won?

Absolutely. Hang on- I’m about to let you in on a little controversial secret…

“R.C. Magnum’s” is the fictional department store name my Grandmother (our curator) made up to use when someone asked her where she purchased her thrifted clothing. It sounds fancy enough, right? They’ll never know…

Secondhand shopping carried a bit of stigma up until recently- I can sadly admit to being embarrassed about it at times back in the 90’s. Thrifting meant you were poor- especially if you grew up in Ojai when I did.

The changes my Grandmother has seen in her 95 years are beyond anything younger generations could begin to comprehend. She lived the Great Depression- has seen changes and knows truths the rest of us would be lucky to merely read interpretations of in textbooks. Her pride in country prompted her to thrift items specifically made in USA, and her taste in textiles always led her to 100% cotton and other natural fibers. She sure was on to something!

In my 40’s now, I can see the changes. I recall a time in the 80’s & 90’s when nobody thought twice about the word “retarded.” We certainly didn’t care if one of the best thrift stores to ever exist had a sign displaying that word above its door. To be honest, it wasn’t considered a bad word choice until someone came up with a replacement for it & declared that it was.

The words on the sign once proudly displayed on Main Street in Ventura, California, (see photo,) is the “R.C.” of RC Magnum’s.

The “Magnum’s” was inspired by “Magnin,” one of the fanciest designer labels with boutiques in Southern Calfornia circa 1970. Magnin was butchered to Magnum’s— I assume because nobody in my family had the coin to actually shop there.

To this day, if you ask my grandmother to this day about a thrifted item she’s wearing, she will always say, “Oh, my favorite store—RC Magnum’s, of course!”

RC Magnum’s did not actually exist until 2023 when she decided it was time to release her lifetime collection of thrifted items back into the world. This is our inventory.

RC Magnum’s is her favorite, and I hope it can be yours too.
