Leather Handbags || Made with Love from India

For generations, Artisans in the sand-swept region of Rajasthan have practiced the art of leather tanning. Our Artisan Partners work to preserve this unique heritage and help it evolve. The result is a collection of handbags that are both beautifully designed and ethically crafted.

While traditional tanning uses harmful chemicals, our Artisan Partners have developed a special tanning process using local plants. This form of “vegetable tanning” is a tradition in this region, and it gives the leather its natural look without the use of chemicals. Vegetable-tanned leather ages gracefully, transitioning from a light fawn to a rich caramel color. This means that each leather bag is an accessory you can carry for years to come!

Our goat leather styles made by our Artisan Partner in India have been some of our best-selling and top-rated styles of all time! Thanks to your purchases, the Product Team at Noonday Collection has collaborated closely with our Artisan Partner to create new styles of bags and accessories. Our new Bravo Bag and Day Dreamer Crossbody are already fan favorites! This increase in demand means consistent, dignified work for the talented Artisans behind each product.

Luis & Marina || from Equador

For Luis and Marina, the opportunity to share their handmade pieces with the world is a dream decades in the making. Growing up near Otavalo, Ecuador, Luis loved the tagua seed crafts that were traditional to his region. He dreamed of one day learning the jewelry trade and earning a living with his own two hands as an Artisan.

When Luis and Marina got married and started a family of their own, they worked hard to earn a living any way they could. In the rural region where they lived, jobs were scarce. People living in their village would find work for a week at a time, and faced constant uncertainty about how they would support their families the next week. Many rural-dwellers were forced to immigrate to the city in search of work. But because cost of living in the urban areas was too high for most rural families, the breadwinners often had to leave their spouses and children behind in the villages.

Luis and Marina dreamed of finding a way to earn a living for themselves while keeping their family together at home. Luis would take odd jobs in construction and agriculture in order to afford the family’s basic necessities, but he continued to harbor his dream of becoming an Artisan.

Eventually, some of the couple’s family members suggested that they try to open a stall in the local market to sell goods made by other craftsmen. Opening their own stall would mean that Marina would be responsible for representing the family in the market while Luis did manual labor jobs.

As they began earning a little extra money in the market, Luis’ dream of supporting his family as an Artisan seemed a little more achievable. Eventually, Marina earned enough money to purchase one sack of seeds for Luis to transform into pieces of handmade jewelry. Luis continued to work manual labor jobs during the day, but he would wake up very early every morning to assemble jewelry out of the seeds they had purchased. Then Marina would gather up the pieces, load up her children, and travel to the market.

Eventually, their pieces began to get the attention of buyers who discovered them in the market. One of Noonday’s sourcing representatives saw their pieces at the market and a business relationship was initiated.

Luis and Marina received their first Noonday order for a brilliant yellow necklace – the aptly named Sonrisa Necklace. Rather than rely on the local marketplace, today they have orders they can count on. “All our dreams have already come true,” Luis shared. “Now we have to learn how to dream even bigger.” They have also been able to hire relatives and neighbors to work with them.

Through capacity building initiatives, Noonday is committed to helping Luis and Marina take their vision and make it into a reality for themselves and other families like theirs.

One of the best things about their business has been the chance to keep their family together. “It makes me happy to be working side by side with my husband in this way,” Marina shared. “I never thought I would have the opportunity to make a living as an Artisan. I am happy to be able to work with Luis and support this dream.”

Ethos Bracelets || Made with Love from India

Our styles made with glass beads originate in India, a country rich in artisanal crafts. Glass jewelry has even been traced back to ancient civilizations in the Indus Valley! For many, glass bead making represents more than a path toward livelihood–it is a generations-old tradition that is integral to their family’s heritage and their community’s story.

Our product team collaborates directly with our Artisan Partner to ensure these traditions are respected while supporting safe and fair employment in an industry that is often exploited.

About 30 years ago, our Artisan Partner crossed paths with glass bead producers in a small town outside of Delhi called Purdilpur. Many of them told stories about mistreatment from local shop keepers who would falter on payments to the Artisans.

Today, around 25 glass bead Artisans are employed! Our Artisan Partner also created a learning center in the community to support the education of the Artisans’ children who would otherwise be vulnerable to child labor.

The process of making each glass bead requires skilled hands, keen attention to detail, and teamwork. Artisans begin with glass rods made of silica, which they melt over a furnace or foot-operated flame to shape them into colorful beads for Noonday pieces.

Lan || from East Asia

“I am so grateful for this opportunity to rebuild my life again,” says Lan – an Artisan who creates Storyline Collection styles like our Opalescent Necklace. Several years ago, Lan’s life was like any other woman. About 20 years ago, he and her husband had moved to the city, their business was taking off, and they lived comfortably while raising their baby boy. “Our dreams were coming true,” says Lan, but tragedy soon struck.

After a year of battling an aggressive cancer and selling their belongings to fund medical costs, Lan’s husband passed away. Lan was left alone with no way to provide for her son. When a cousin offered her a job in a brothel disguised as a massage parlor, Lan found herself tricked into a life that she would have never chosen for herself. With nowhere else to turn, Lan stayed to provide for her family.

When COVID-19 struck their city, neighborhoods were locked down, and Lan was left without work. But our Artisan Partner’s Outreach Team found a way to deliver care packages and essential items to Lan and other women – and they invited Lan to begin a new life with a stable job making jewelry.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Lan reflects, “I jumped at the chance to change my life and be a good example to my son.” Lan is now a respected employee at the Artisan Workshop where Storyline Collection styles are made and is able to provide for her family while recognizing her worth and potential. When you purchase a Storyline accessory, you provide hope and empower women to tell a new story for themselves and their families – women just like Lan.

Repotted some plants. None of these containers are new, just new to me!

🌱One of them had a plant from a box store and I painted it grey to make it match my indoor color scheme.

🌱The terra cotta pots are from an estate sale. So I'm giving them a new life. I think I paid $5 for 5 of them!

New pots are expensive and there is no reason to spend money when there are other options to . Part of a is to avoid buying brand new when there are other options.

What's your favorite way to upcycle?

It's back to school week here at our house! I found these super cute letter boards for $5 at . I'm sending them to school with each of my kids for their teachers.

It's a simple way to show their teacher that I care about them and I'm rooting for them too!

I added a positive message because first-week-of-school teachers don't have the time to put together a letter board! 🤣 But in the future, they can change it out for a quote that motivates them, or their class, or both!

What would you put on a letter board for a teacher? 🤔
