The medical emergency that forced a Delta flight to divert wasn’t a person — it was a Great Dane.
A Delta flight traveling from Detroit to Los Angeles made an unexpected stop in Minneapolis after a Great Dane in the cabin became seriously ill about an hour into the five-hour journey.
Flight attendants asked if there was a veterinarian onboard, and one passenger stepped forward to help. After assessing the situation, the veterinarian advised that the Great Dane needed care as soon as possible, and the captain made the decision to land early so the dog and its owner could get medical attention.
The Airbus A320, carrying 181 passengers and six crew members, diverted to Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport, where medical personnel were waiting on the ground to meet the Great Dane and its owner.
The unscheduled landing delayed the flight by about two and a half hours, but passengers were later told by the captain that the dog was expected to be okay.
Delta said the decision was made because “the safety of our customers and people comes before everything else,” adding that the diversion allowed the sick cabin pet to receive proper care.
The flight eventually continued on to Los Angeles without further issues.
While many praised the captain for putting a pet’s life first, others questioned whether diverting an entire flight for an animal was the right decision.
