Trump says he won't sign a single bill until Congress changes voting laws. One congresswoman's response: "He wants to hold us hostage." Noncitizen voting is already illegal.
Rep. Melanie Stansbury responded to Trump's threat to block all legislation until the SAVE Act passes: "He wants to hold us hostage unless we disenfranchise millions of voters. We are NOT going to pass your voter suppression bill. Period."
Trump announced on March 8 he would not sign any bills until Congress passes the SAVE America Act, requiring proof of citizenship and photo ID to vote. Noncitizen voting is already illegal. An estimated 21 million Americans lack the required documents. 69 million married women have birth certificates that no longer match their legal name. Schumer called it "Jim Crow 2.0."
The bill passed the House but needs 60 Senate votes — it has 53. Democrats have vowed to block it. Trump told Republicans: "I'm for not approving anything until this is approved." The standoff is stalling military funding, DHS spending, and judicial appointments during a war.
