BIGGER THAN FASHION

For most of my childhood, home wasn’t a place. It was a feeling I kept losing and rebuilding, again and again, in different countries, with different people.

I had a hard time talking about it. Not knowing how to talk about it meant I wasn’t sure I belonged anywhere. I didn’t know how to hold the shame and the pride in the same sentence yet. What I did know, even as a kid selling oranges in the market, was that I loved beauty.

I’d watch women a few stalls down sell beautiful, luxurious fabrics I longed to afford. I always knew I wanted to design. I just didn’t know I could create the opportunity without waiting for life.

I used to think I had to explain my way out of where I came from. Now I understand I was always meant to be one of the good things that came out of Africa.

This is JlxTheLabel. Slow, intentional, made the way I was raised to make anything that mattered, by hand, with care, without rushing it.
