I took this shot from the beach of Huntington Beach — the columns of the pier framed behind him, whitewater, board flying through the air.

What stuck with me wasn't the just the surfer, it was also columns. That row of dark pillars standing against all that blue green water looked like something off an old travel poster, and I kept coming back to the framing.

So same pillars. Same wave. Same weightless half-second at the top of the turn — except this time the sun dropped down behind it, and the guy on the board who never paddled back in.💀🌊

Printed big across the back of a Comfort Colors 1717 — the heavyweight, garment-dyed kind that feels broken in the day it shows up. Nine colors, S–4XL, plus a little skull-in-a-Hawaiian-shirt emblem on the left chest.

Dawn patrol hits different when you've got nothing but time. ☠️🌅

Every surfer knows the good waves happen before the coffee. Our guy just takes it a step further — he's been beating the crowd by roughly a century.

Front — a small "Original Salt" badge on the left chest. Skull, shell lei, floral shirt, one teal wave curling behind him. Understated. Extremely salty.

Back — the whole walk-out. Footprints down the wet sand, board under the arm, palms and a volcano on the horizon, and that striped retro sunrise coming up over the water. DAWN PATROL.

Went to Huntington Beach on Sunday for the last day of the US Open Surfing Championship. World-class surfing talent was on display all day. Congratulations to the women's champion, Sierra Kerr from Australia, and to the men's champion, Jake Marshall from the United States.
