Since I’ve started Pilates, I’ve visited a bunch of Pilates studios, taken, countless classes, watched videos, and observed other instructors. I learned a lot on what to do and also what I would not have happened in my class. I want my clients to feel safe in their sessions or group classes with me so if these following things have happened your class, you might want to think about looking for a different instructor or studio:
1️⃣ Instructor doesn’t ask about injuries before the class. This information prohibits the instructor to cater to the client’s body so if this question doesn’t happen before class starts, make sure you tell your instructor yourself if you have an injury so they are aware and can help you modify.
2️⃣ During class, the instructor doesn’t offer modifications or progression options. It looks a little bit different in a private setting, but if the instructor doesn’t challenge you overtime, then it might be time to consider looking for another instructor.
3️⃣ If an instructor tells you that you have to earn your food during your class, then it is not a good place for you to be at. Movement should be about joy and the mental and physical health and not about earning your food. You need to eat to stay alive, you need to move to stay healthy.
4️⃣ If an instructor is comparing two clients in a group class to each other, as one being weaker and one being stronger. Pilates is for everybody. You don’t need to be skinny, you don’t need to be young, you don’t need to be perfectly healthy. You can still come to Pilates and move your body with safety. So if you ever felt uncomfortable at a Pilates class, please look for a new spot.
I have so many more of these, but let me know in the comments. What are your red flags in a Pilates class? 🚩
