“Why do I feel like I’m in a fish bowl with my new glasses?” 👓🐠

This is a fairly common concern people have when they pick up a new pair of glasses. Especially if they have a high cylinder prescription.

That “fish bowl” feeling happens because your eyes and brain are adjusting to a new way of seeing. It can be caused by several factors, including:

• A significant change in your prescription.

• A change in lens material or lens design, or base curve.

• Switching to a larger or more wrapped frame.

• Your eyes adapting to a stronger prescription that corrects your vision more accurately than before.

The result? Objects near the edges of your vision may seem curved, stretched, or like you’re looking through a bowl of water.

The good news is that for most people, this sensation improves over a few days to a couple of weeks as the brain adapts.

However, if the distortion is severe, doesn’t improve, or is only happening in one eye, don’t assume you just need more time. Return to your optician. We’ll verify that your prescription, measurements, lens fabrication, and frame adjustment are all correct before deciding whether you need to return to your eye doctor.

Not every adaptation issue is a problem—but not every problem is simply an adaptation issue. That’s why a proper follow-up is so important.
