FOUNDED BY TWO DARIEN MOMS, NEW FULL-SERVICE COMPANY DEBUTS CUSTOM GLASS COVER AND HARD COVER ARTBOOKS SHOWCASING CHILDREN’S ARTWORK
Darien, CT: Jumbo Dog Artbooks was recently founded by two Darien moms, Yaël (pronounced Yah-el) van Hulst and Jessica Anderson, to help parents turn their children’s artwork into custom-designed coffee table books. “So many parents these days collect their childr
en’s art, and it ends up in a bin or bag in the closet. Once it’s put away, no one looks at it again, although parents don’t want to get rid of it. So, our idea was to take all of this art off parents’ hands, and create a beautiful book that they would want to display, look at, and have forever,” says van Hulst. The company uses a state-of-the art wide-format scanner to scan artwork up to 5ft by 3ft. Sculptures and other 3D pieces are professionally photographed in their studio to include in the books as well. The process to create the books is designed to be very simple for busy parents. Parents only need to pick the art they want in their book. For Darien clients, van Hulst or Anderson can come to your home to pick up the art, or even help sort through it on-site. Jumbo Dog Artbooks will scan and photograph the art, and custom-design the book. Parents will then receive a link to review their book or books online for approval. Once approved, books take less than 2 weeks to produce and are then delivered to the client with their original artwork.
“What sets us apart is the quality of the books,” says Anderson. “Once people see our books they understand what makes them special.” Jumbo Dog’s signature glass cover books feature a stunning, anti-scratch glass top, with a precision beveled edge and thick, unbending pages on substrate core. The books are flush mounted, with real silver halide photo paper, like a traditional high-end wedding album. The superior bindings allow them to lay completely flat.
“Regular photo books that you would order yourself, on a more commercial site, are mass-produced using inkjet printers and stock papers. They don’t have the same look or durability,” Anderson says. The pages in the glass cover book are Fuji’s high quality archival line, so the colors will not fade over time. The books are printed on a LaserLab printer, and the pages have a coating that makes them stain resistant. Jumbo Dog Artbooks also offers a high quality hard cover book, which features one image that wraps around the entire book, and thinner pages. “The hard cover books are beautiful enough to display on a coffee table, but are also great if you’re going to archive a large number of art pieces,” says van Hulst. The number of pieces you can include in an artbook depends on which book size and design you select.
“We’ve had clients literally just drop off bags of their art and say ‘Here, you do it!’ It’s a great feeling to see someone’s face light up when you hand them back a beautiful artbook that the whole family will enjoy for years to come,” says van Hulst.
