Raise the athlete, not the scoreboard!

Two young athletes can begin with similar natural ability.

Fast forward a few years, and one has become stronger, faster, more coordinated, more resilient, and more confident.

What happened?

The difference often isn’t talent.

It’s the development gap.

Athletic potential isn’t fixed—it’s realized through the right environment, quality coaching, nutrition, sleep, movement, and thousands of intentional decisions over time.

As parents, it’s easy to focus on today’s results:
🏒 Making the team.
🏒 Scoring goals.
🏒 Ice time.

But the bigger question is:

Are we building the athlete they’ll become at 16, 18, or 21?

The goal isn’t to maximize today’s performance.

The goal is to maximize tomorrow’s capacity.

👉 Swipe through to see the framework we use to think about long-term athletic development.

Which factor do you think is most overlooked in youth sports today—sleep, nutrition, movement, coaching, or mindset?

Leave your thoughts below. We’d love to hear them.

“You can’t teach Hockey IQ.” We hear it every tournament weekend. We think it’s wrong.

Yes, cognitive ability varies — the research is clear on that. But a different starting point is not a fixed ceiling.
We tested it this summer with Coach Matt Moulson. A few weeks in, my son came home and said:

“Dad, the boys are talking about the Flow Line while they’re playing NHL. They’re calling each other out when someone breaks the flow.”

They weren’t memorizing concepts. They’d built a shared way of seeing the game — and they were coaching each other with no adult in the room.

To be clear: not instead of skill sessions. Alongside them.

Your kid gets coached on skating, shooting, and passing. Nobody’s coaching the other 70% of the game.

Coach Moulson is changing that. He’s spearheading the first-ever Grit Kore Hockey IQ Camp — built directly on the book.

And here’s what we didn’t expect:

The kids are leaning hardest into the nutrition and mental strength work.

Not the drills. The stuff nobody’s ever bothered to teach them. How to fuel a tournament weekend. How to reset after a bad shift. How to walk into a big game and not shrink.

Turns out when you finally give young athletes the whole picture — mind and body, not just hands and feet — they want it.

That’s what the Grit Kore Hockey IQ book was built for:

🧠 Hockey IQ — reading plays, scanning, seeing the ice a beat before everyone else
🥗 Nutrition — fueling between games, not just surviving them
💪 Mental strength — tools for pressure, mistakes, and the shift after the bad shift

Nine weeks. Which is exactly what’s between right now and next season.

Coaches + team managers — run it with your whole roster. One language, one standard, everyone bought in.
Parents + players — work it at home. Nine weeks of what most kids never get taught.

Next season is decided in the offseason. It always was.

One player was taught. His father played in the NHL. The entire lesson:

Two scans as the puck comes to you. Look far early. Look close late.

That’s it. Most kids have never heard it once.

Tonight, on the drive home, ask:

“What did you see before you got the puck?”

If the answer is “…the puck” — you just found the thing worth working on.
