One player was taught. His father played in the NHL. The entire lesson:

Two scans as the puck comes to you. Look far early. Look close late.

That’s it. Most kids have never heard it once.

Tonight, on the drive home, ask:

“What did you see before you got the puck?”

If the answer is “…the puck” — you just found the thing worth working on.

Food can fuel you — or slow you down. It’s the easiest edge most teams haven’t tapped yet. 🏒

Hockey parents and players, we’ve all been there: tournament weekend, team lunch between games. Tenders, burgers, fries — the players are starving, the options are limited, it’s the easiest go-to for a big team and limited time.

But guess what? Right when that second game starts, your bodies are burning energy digesting heavy food instead of powering your performance.

Truthfully, I only caught it because I grew up swimming, where fueling and recovery part of the basics. Swimmers have a meal plan before meets and even between races. In youth hockey, almost nobody talks about it.

So we put it in the Hockey IQ book. 📖

The nutrition section gives kids easy, practical tips they can actually use:

🍗 When to eat protein (after practice and games — not before)
⚡ What to eat between games for quick, clean energy
