Mastered the throttle already? Here’s a hidden clutch technique for those who dare try it. 👀

This is the weirdest tip from the drifting world that CAN - but ideally shouldn’t - be used as a tool for many different driving situations…

We all know“Clutch Kicking” can cause a drift. It’s probably one of the first things you noticed watching Tokyo Drift driving scenes for the first time, but when drifting at intermediate/advanced levels it isn’t just for helping lose traction, clutch kicking DURING a drift can actually RECOVER grip when you need it most.

When you open the clutch in drift, the rear tires naturally drop speed to as close to ground speed as possible. The closer you get to static friction (no slip) the better your tires’ rubber generally performs. Then with a slightly higher friction coefficient, RE-engaging the clutch (with lots of extra inertia built up in the flywheel from the engine being allowed to freely rev) applies a forward drive with far more peak force than the engines power output can generate. With all that forward force driving the tires towards the front of the car, the car suspended above the tires leans a LOT of weight briefly on the rear.

Antisquat characteristics in your suspension then takes all those forces, and points them at each other in a way where (to keep it VERY simple) the only direction they can escape is straight down through the tire, momentarily pressing it hard into the road to create even more traction. This is why some cars drag racing look like their trunks move UP when they launch rather than down. If the forces shove the wheel down hard enough and the ground doesn’t move out of the way, the car will instead.

TLDR: For a FRACTION of a second, a clutch kick during slip actually produces a huge spike in traction and driving force that if used at the right times, can allow you to make significant adjustments to your path of travel, or adapt to changing tire or track conditions when it would otherwise be “too late” to save yourself from looking at the road from the scenery... 😅 Cool stuff!

Somewhere in an alternate universe, this is what people mean when they say “Both!” after being asked “Is your car manual or automatic?”

Floating gears and clutchless shifting is often explained as the concept of knowing rpms you should be at for a specific speed, and targeting that RPM while you engage a gear - which is kinda silly and would be 100% useless in any real world scenario, like making it home with a leaking clutch line, or downshifting while on the brakes in a rally car.

The better way to think about it in regular synchromesh cars, is to provide yourself windows where you simply ask the car for the shift, and wait for the car to allow it. You can do this pretty easily by revving a little higher than a normal rev match in neutral, letting those extra revs fall freely, applying pressure towards the gear you want, and waiting until the RPM falls to the speed that lets you into the gear. To avoid grinding and damage, this should ALWAYS be done with RPM’s dropping and 0% throttle. If a gear doesn’t quite engage and you’re hovering on the throttle trying to guess the exact RPM you need, it’s very easy to accidentally send torque through those components at a catastrophic time and find yourself with bonus neutrals… Not to mention it’s generally beneficial to be looking at the road and not your tach.
