HWY 1 IS HARD CLOSED IN BIG SUR.

Timber Fire: 4,245 acres, 7% contained, 1,400+ personnel. Southbound closure: MM 45.1 at Big Sur Bakery. No through-route Monterey to Cambria. Evacuation orders are active; officials are asking visitors to stay out.

From the south: do not route up coastal Hwy 1. Take US-101 to Salinas, then SR-68 west. From the north, Hwy 1 from Santa Cruz is open. 101 to 156 to 68 is a backup.

CHP: special enforcement Santa Cruz to Ventura through the weekend, aircraft spotting for ground units.

Rarely does a loop of tarmac like this exist so close to multiple major cities, that you can wake up and get to the roads for sunrise.

If you’re in Central or West Texas, you may know about the Twisted Sisters and need a reminder to go back this weekend. If you’ve never heard of them, here’s everything you need to know to enjoy your first drive!

Thanks to the insiders hillcountryrallye, who know these driving roads and surrounding networks more than anyone, and they agree the Three Twisted Sisters is a drive you owe it to yourself to make time for.

This loop might be the truest “therapy drive.” By that we mean, Tail of the Dragon is called therapy by some. But the experience for newcomers is much closer to thinking you signed up for a yoga class, and discovering it was actually an audition for the WWE. Clearly not what you were going for, but you don’t mind it and it seems easy enough and- wait someone is throwing an actual steel object at me now hang on time out.

In the words of Ben & Ben from Gears and Gasoline, “The Tail of the Dragon, has ZERO CHILL.” To the Bens, give this one a shot on your next grand roadtrip, and let the people know if it’s truly the gem we think it is.
