Fun fact for today:🌽 What’s that on top the corn?!

That’s the tassle! The tassel is the male flower of the corn plant. It releases pollen that is carried by the wind and falls down to the corn silks (corn hairs)sticking out of each ear.

Each silk is connected to one potential kernel of corn. When pollen lands on a silk, it travels down to fertilize that cob. If a silk isn’t pollinated, that cob won’t develop kernels, which is why you sometimes see ears with missing kernels.

This is one of the most important stages of the growing season, and it’s why farmers keep such a close eye on the weather. The right mix of sunshine and rain helps give the corn the best chance for successful pollination and a full ear of kernels. 🌽

🚜 Oh how things have changed! But also kind of still the same!

Adam and I started dating when Adam was working at Weise’s and I was mowing the lawn there. Soon I ended up riding in the truck with him when he was able to take a break from the cows and lend a hand driving truck while chopping hay.

Well here we are 11 years, 4 kids and whole lotta cows later and we’re still riding in the truck together! Life has changed quite a bit since then. These days, we’re rarely alone, and it’s even rarer that we get to sit side by side, but it won’t be like this for long. 🥹

I hope we get to enjoy many more sunset truck rides together. And someday, I hope our kids get to share this same simple tradition with their future girlfriend or boyfriend—stealing a little one-on-one time together in the middle of a busy season and making memories they’ll look back on for years to come. ❤️

🍋 Free Lemonade for a Great Cause! 🍋

Stop by Vanden Wymelenberg Farm Goods tomorrow between 2–6 PM for a refreshing cup of FREE lemonade!

Our kids are excited to be handing it out, and while the lemonade is completely free, we’ll be accepting freewill donations to support St. Mary’s Church CCD Program. Every donation, big or small, is greatly appreciated and will be shared amongst St. Mary’s CCD teachers for in their classrooms.

So grab a cold glass of lemonade, browse the store, and help encourage these young entrepreneurs while supporting our local parish. ✝️

🚜 A little small-town excitement in downtown Shirley today!

Shirley Feed Mill was busy placing their newest grain bin, and it was pretty neat to watch. It’s not something you get to see every day, and we couldn’t help but stop and watch for a while. 🌾🫛
