There’s something about summer in Deadwood that feels different from everywhere else in the Black Hills. Maybe it’s the music echoing off the old brick buildings on Main Street. Maybe it’s the smell of sunscreen, leather, beer, and burgers all mixing together downtown. Or maybe it’s just the fact that one weekend you’re watching a PRCA rodeo and the next you’re standing in the middle of a free concert surrounded by thousands of people singing along under the lights at Outlaw Square.

If you’re planning a trip to Deadwood this summer, here’s a breakdown of some of the biggest events happening in town, what to expect, whether they’re family-friendly, and what kind of crowds usually show up.

Summer Kickstart Weekend
May 22-23, 2026

Deadwood kicks off summer with live music at Outlaw Square, including artists like Pecos & The Rooftops, Judd Hoos, and Jessie G. This weekend usually feels like the unofficial beginning of tourist season. Patio seating fills up, Main Street gets busy again, and the whole town starts coming back to life after winter.

Hosted by the Western Legacy Foundation, the event features PRCA Xtreme Saddle Bronc Riding, WPRA Ladies Breakaway Roping, high school rodeo matches, live music, vendors, and family-friendly activities throughout the day. The event focuses heavily on preserving western heritage while also raising money for scholarships and youth programs across western South Dakota.

Days of ’76 Rodeo & Parades

A Few Things Visitors Should Know

Parking
Parking can get difficult during major events. Shuttle systems often run during larger weekends like Kool Deadwood Nites and Days of ’76.

Lodging
Hotels book up months early for:

Days of ’76
Sturgis Rally
Kool Deadwood Nites
Wild Bill Days

Weather
Deadwood summer weather changes fast. Bring layers, especially for evening concerts.

Family vs. Adult Atmosphere
Deadwood does a surprisingly good job balancing both. Daytime is often very family-friendly. Late nights lean more casino/bar atmosphere depending on the weekend.

And honestly, that contrast is part of what makes summer in Deadwood feel so alive. One minute you’re watching kids dance in front of a free concert at Outlaw Square, and a few hours later the entire town feels like an old western party that somehow never really ended.

This is one of the coolest things we’ve brought into the store in a long time!! Have you heard of Fahlo bracelets?!

Not only are the bracelets made with genuine gemstones like jasper, tiger's eye, and lava stone, each bracelet tracks a real animal. When you open your bracelet, you get to learn its name, see photos, and track its real-time movements!

I grabbed a sloth bracelet for myself, downloaded the app, and found out I’m now emotionally invested in a sloth in Costa Rica named Calypso 💫

Choose from a snow leopard, rhino, elephant, sea turtle, koala, dolphin, penguin, tiger, gorilla, polar bear, or sloth.

And they’re only $16.95! Shop: https://tinyurl.com/2bp3fk6d

WHERE'S WALDO?!

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to join an extremely motivated and inspiring group of individuals at the Energize! Exploring Innovative Rural Communities conference in Wall, SD. We were supported by the South Dakota Retailers Association as part of the NextGen Business Builders group. This was such a cool opportunity, and I look forward to the next!

Can you spot me?!

Thanks for the shoutout!
