My girl did her big one with this piece! She walked in like the mood is office vixen and then completely killed it! The cape, the collar, the color the top stitching 😘💋, it is bold and exuberant. I have so many unposted pictures of my students bringing their designs to life. 🤦🏾‍♀️ Im going to do better! This was such a cool piece from concept to completion with lots of fine tuned details. Like the hood is detachable and the length is adjustable and she added hidden loops so she can add chains draped down her back. 💗 oh and let's not forget the French seams to keep the inside of the hood perfectly finished without the added bulk of a lining 👏🏽👏🏽

The theme for this season is, Prose and Pose: Exploring Literature through Fashion. Each designer was challenged to create a 7 piece collection based on the book of their choosing. The fashion show is on Saturday, August 15th and there will also be mandatory rehearsals and fittings.

This is our 5th year running our 8 week Fashion Design and Sewing Summer Camp! Our mission is to help young girls develop a positive self-image, healthy coping mechanisms and communication skills while learning to sew.

During this 8 week program we explore the topics of self esteem, confidence, body image, anxiety and coping mechanisms all while designing and sewing custom ball gowns.

The 2026 Theme is Looks & Books: Exploring Literature through Fashion.

Each designer will be challenged to create a gown based on the book of their choosing.

I've been struggling real bad to find clothes that I feel comfortable in and appropriate for going to gym, so firstly check out the jersey! It's says, "Chasing that Scholastic Bookfair High" 😆 How cute!! And perfectly on theme for the year.

Yesterday I started rereading Fly Girl by Omar Tyree. When I read this book I was like late middle school early high-school maybe 9th grade. Whew baby, I didn't pick up on it then but he did an excellent job of showing how the oversexuallization of the youthful characters was directly influenced by the terrible parenting, awful examples of marriage/romance and lack of validation nurturing and support they were receiving at home. It's very easy to label kids as fast and all that without calling into focus what the parents and community is leading them to!

Tracy's dad is straight pi***ng me off, like sir how tf you just leave your wife for years... "reconnect" but never move back in EVEN AFTER having another child...I mean left her for 2 years, "came back" but basically only visited some weekends because his apartment was closer to his job... the new baby is walkig talking and running around he still hasn't moved back in.... got this women a married working pregnant/postpartum single married woman 🫨🫨I swear he only came back to baby trap her because he realized she was moving on.

Make some commotion for the back of the shirt! Loved how this criss cross wrap design came out, and that fact that it was literally made from off cuts from the pants if even better! Zero waste 👏🏽❤️ let's get into the Looks/Books styling and the book itself.

Okay let me tell you how my brain works 🤣🤣 the color theme for this year is this deep rust orange...

This is the first year we had a two day orientation.

My day one and day two looks were made of the same combination of fabrics.

Day 1: Orange African print wide leg pants and asymmetrical wrap shirt. With black and white swing jacket.

Day 2: Corset dress with full circle skirt in the black and white material and a black kaftan accented with the orange African print fabric.

AND my mini mannequin had to be matching me!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤦🏾‍♀️ I know a mess 🤣🤣🤣 but I love it here 🥰🥰

It is my honor and pleasure to introduce to you Sew Modest Studio 2026 Fellowship Cohort!

We had an incredible orientation weekend!

Save the date August 15 at the Detroit Main Library downtown to see their beautiful collections at the Prose & Pose: Exploring Literature through Fashion, fashion show!

I'm so proud of the 2025 cohort and what we were able to achieve and the vulnerability it took to stand in front of hundreds of people and bear your soul through words and carefully crafted couture collections to depict their Story of Self. It was a life changing experience.

In deep reflection of the year and the outcomes, I found that our biggest missteps wasn't in the people who didn't make it to the end of the process but in the tiny fractures that were allowed to deepen, multiply grow into huge riffs that cracked the community built by those who did.

With the 2026 cohort, our challenge is not only to show up with passion for our individual self but to also build a community that can withstand the pressures, conflicts and growing pains that will naturally come when creating from such a deep place of vulnerability.

Our goal is to use Fashion design as the outlet. An artform that centers emotional expression, design as a revolutionary of act of self healing, storytelling and unearthing our ancestorial narratives.

Depicting a narrative in which we are actively refusing to allow our character nuances to be washed away with broad strokes is hard AF! We spent this incredible two day orientation unlearning habits that make us doubtful, unearthing the stories we want to tell and buidling the foundation for our community to be stronger than ever!
