Almost there. Every shell, color and detail chosen specifically for this piece and the home it’s going to.

This is why I love creating custom work.

The finished shell is only the last version you see.

Before that? I paint over it. Change the color. Add something. Take something away. Decide I love it. Decide I don’t. And keep going until it finally feels right.

That’s probably my favorite part of creating. I rarely know exactly where a piece is going when I start. I just know when I’ve finally arrived.

Here’s 22 seconds of the evolution from blank shell to finished piece.

Would you have stopped at one of the earlier versions?

Nature is probably my biggest source of it. The colors, patterns, textures, shells, flowers, palms… then I walk into my studio and somehow all of those little things I noticed start finding their way into what I create.

Here’s a 22-second trip through my creative brain.

Studio Thoughts from the car…
Comparison really is the thief of joy…but I think it’s also the thief of focus.

I love this part 🐚 playing with color, texture, pearls, shells and beads until each charm finds its personality.

Chicken salad shortcut I wish I knew YEARS ago.

I make the chicken in my with , then toss it straight into my mixer and let it do the shredding for me. SO easy.

I use chicken and finish it off with because Duke’s just makes everything better.

Save this one for the next time you’re making chicken salad.

A few more finishing touches and this commission will be complete.

Would you have stopped here or kept going?

This is the part where it’s constantly evolving.

My process has to flow. It has to feel cohesive. I’ll move things around, change colors, repaint shells, add something, take something away…

It takes time.

Because for me, it’s not complete until it feels just right.

I’ll be working on this commission all weekend. Follow along to see where it ends up.
