Laura Nelkin Designs

Laura Nelkin Designs Knitwear Design by Laura Nelkin I live in upstate New York, where the sunny season is short—leaving plenty of time to be indoors knitting.

Though I have a degree in apparel design from Cornell University, I took to knitting years ago and haven’t looked back. I’m currently enamored with lace and with incorporating beads into knitted jewelry, so many of my designs lean in this direction. But I also have an affinity for cowls and knitted hoods! I travel often to teach these techniques (and more!) at workshops around the country (and the

world by way of cruise ships!). I have a line of knitting kits, self-published patterns, and run mystery and regular Knit-A-Longs several times a year. My first book, “Knockout Knits,” was released with Random House in September 2014. When I’m not designing or knitting, I can be found gardening, whipping up yummy feasts with my family, or taking time to play.

Did you hear we have a "Put a Bead on it KAL" in my Facebook Group all summer long? Alison knit Ailé, a design of mine from 2010, with her yarn from Maviola and she's the first winner.

One of the things I ❤️ about knit-a-long's is watching y'all do a deep dive into my back catalog to find patterns to play with! I'm so excited to see all your makes!

If you are looking for the pattern just google Ailé by Laura Nelkin and if you are looking for my Facebook Group search for Knit! with Laura Nelkin. I try to make it easy to find me 😘!

World Wide Knitting Day was celebrated on the Woolen Circle in Iceland with a group of cruisers arriving early. Waterfalls, wool, sheep, vikings, tomatoes, and the most exciting a skein of very rare Icelandic cashmere yarn. Something precious will be dreamt up for it! (I got y'all a skein too... more on that later!)

Can I tell you about my new travel sweater?

It's a long sleeve Lolanchita I knit with 1 skein of Lee.

Lee is a woolen spun, lace weight made with a combination of Rambouillet wool from upstate NY & fawn colored alpaca from Western MA. It is milled at Green Mountain Spinnery in Vermont and has a whopping 880 yards/skein! I love a big skein of yarn! Lightweight with a fuzzy halo, it knit up into a diaphanous fabric I'm deeply in love with.

I can wear my new Lolanchita with a tank underneath or a long sleeve top for more warmth. This sweater is insanely packable as it squishes down to nothing. You know she's coming on my upcoming cruise.

I think it is important to note that I made a size 3 and my body and sleeves were a little shorter than the schematic. You'll most likely want 2 skeins if your torso is longer than mine (most are!). You could even go for two colors and have fun with your yoke like Lois did on her Lolanchita (scroll through to see that!).

There is detailed information on how I worked the sleeves with stitch saver in a demo I did during last month's live. Plus I wrote up my modifications on my Lolanchita's project page on Ravelry. And, if you get my newsletter, one is being sent out later today that does a deep dive as well!

The pattern is on my website and Ravelry and Jill's shop is stocked with Lee! Let's knit Lolanchitas together!

A rare trip to my alma matter with Suzy Quiles and Malinda during reunion weekend. We had a tour of the Cornell Costume Collections extraordinary lace pieces, a deep dive into their RBG exhibit, and an extra special peek into their new facilities... sometimes I want to go back to school and get to do it all over again! (I mean, they have knit design now!)
