CELEBRATE BURNS NIGHT

Though not as popular in the States as in Scotland, Burns Night has become an occasion that is happily celebrated across the world.

Burns Night celebrates the works of Scotland's most notable writer, Robert "Rabbie" Burns. Both a poet and lyricist that celebrated his love of Scotland and the Scottish language, Burns' most lasting piece, "Auld Lang Syne", is still used each year to ring-in the new year. Though he only lived to be 37, it is estimated he composed over 550 different pieces during his lifetime, many of his compilations derived from early folk music and stories that were passed down orally from one generation to the next.

Burns Night is an over 200-year tradition of celebrating the life works and legacy of Robert Burns. Observed on or around his birthday, January 25th, the evening events include a celebratory supper like no other. After a short saying of Grace, the traditional haggis is placed on a silver platter, is bagpiped into the room, and is ceremoniously carved to the reading of Burns' "Address to a Haggis". After several toasts of Highland Scotch, the haggis and sides of neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes) are served. After more toasts, there is typically a Ceilidh [pronounced kay-lee] with traditional Scottish music and dancing. The evening typically concludes with a hearty rendition of "Ald Lang Syne".

An interesting fact: A crater on the planet Mercury is named after Robert Burns.

Hello RL Followers,
Renaissance Leather's owner and master artisan, Travis, lost his son unexpectedly on Monday. Many of you know Travis and his dedication to his craft and we ask, if you have a few spare moments, please send a kind word to him and his family during their time of mourning. Instead of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the GoFundMe set up on the family's behalf. They are trying to have a Viking funeral for him and need help with cremation expenses.
