Early yesterday morning I logged on to attend the IACDE 3D Summit’s final event for this season’s theme “Back to the 90’s.”

This was my second time participating, and I really appreciate all the insights and work flow learnings that come from attending or watching recordings of the various workshops that take place in the months leading up to the event. It was also super interesting to hear from other participants during the breakout room discussions as they recounted their process of using multiple software platforms and digital assets to create highly complex renders.

Life and work has been particularly busy for me in recent months, and I didn’t get a chance to focus on creating this 90’s tracksuit until last weekend. After gathering some vintage image references for color palette and style lines, I had fun altering some existing block patterns to create a more vintage appropriate silhouette. Then I used the pen tool to draw cut lines and played with color blocking.

While I didn’t have time to experiment with taking my rendering to the next level in an external environment, I liked how the technicolor lighting settings in Browzwear enhanced the 90’s vibe. I’ve totally been having flashbacks to my childhood with all the 90’s style resurgence this year, and I’m happy I took a little time to play with this theme in 3D.

I love being able to efficiently validate grading across a size set using avatars in the 3D Review workspace.

For this project, a client came to me with an old graded PDF pattern and a request to shorten the sleeves about 2”. Once I converted and combined all the individual files for each size into a nested pattern in my 2D CAD program (a much more tedious process than opening a graded industry standard DXF file), I was finally able to review the existing grade from S-4X. In doing so, I discovered that the sleeves and body were growing significantly in length between each size – much more than they should. To get a better sense of the sleeve length in each size, I decided to dress the pattern in 3D. Sure enough, the proportions were way off as the sizes got further from the Large base size, and the 2X-4X in particular were excessively long. (Pictured: S,M,L,2X,4X on Alvanon’s North American Standard Men’s 36-52)

It's a common misconception that as the circumference of garments increase, the length should follow in similar proportion - especially on larger sizes. However, in some cases the larger sizes actually need to get shorter in some areas, as was the case with this raglan sleeve. The upper portion of a raglan sleeve gets taller as the chest girth increases since the raglan shoulder seams get longer. On this style, the sleeve length below the armpit had to get shorter on the 3X and 4X to maintain similar proportions to the L length from neck to wrist. All said and done, I ended up shortening the L sleeve 2” and taking 7.5” off the length of the 4X sleeve!! I also reduced the torso length grade so the 4X wouldn’t end up looking like a tunic. Overall, the fit is much improved across the graded set.

Being able to make these updates in 3D saved a significant amount of time and materials as it eliminated the need for running a size set of physical samples; the client was able to quickly see and approve the revisions and I was able to turn this project around within a day. Fitting and grading in 3D is a game changer!

Here’s a fun 3D project I recently completed for the 3D Summit for apparel professionals. This is my take on a classic Yves Saint Laurent dress inspired by Mondrian. It was created in Browzwear and dressed on a human textured AlvaForm that I just got my hands on last week.

I am excited to announce that I have partnered with to use their avatars in to achieve more accurate fitting and graded size set reviews in 3D! Their forms are based on a tremendous amount of regional specific body measurement research and are the gold standard for fitting.

Cutting a sample for a personal project, and loving the bright color on my cutting table. This Hardface / Shearling is quite thick and not very stretchy, so required some adjustments to the pattern.

A little departure from apparel with this recent project: I developed a pattern and sewed a quick mock up of these barricade covers for Hookfish Mfg, a local sublimation print / cut / sew house. They produced and installed a number of these covers around Denver’s Civic Center Park, where is now open daily through Dec. 23.

Super excited to get my hands on this fresh new fleece CAMP jacket that just launched! This is definitely going to be a staple in my closet this season. It comes in men’s and women’s sizing, with hood and no hood versions available. Swipe to see some 3D samples we built in during patternmaking and development, as well as the no hood variation in other color ways.

I love working with Colorado companies on outdoor adventure apparel, and am enjoying the way 3D sampling has streamlined the development process this year. I’m sewing fewer physical samples in the process of getting styles production-ready, as fitting in 3D makes a big difference in how well the first physical samples fit.

3D has quickly become an integral tool in our patternmaking and product development process. Since implementing last year, 3D samples have significantly reduced the development lead time and number of physical samples sewn as well as materials used.

Often, style and fit revisions can be turned around in 3D within hours or a few days vs. weeks of sewing multiple rounds of physical samples and waiting on shipping delays and fitting feedback. When a physical sample is sewn after an initial 3D review, it’s more likely to be close to the design intent and just need some refinement.

Plus, once a style is set up in 3D, it’s much quicker and easier to experiment with colorways and prints, as well as see how different fabrics affect the fit and drape.
