SHE WEARS HER STORY - 313 DAY EDIT

Some women tell stories.
Others create worlds where stories can exist.

In my series ‘She Wears Her Story’, I highlight a metro Detroit woman who embodies power, purpose, and personal expression.

Meet Lara Sfire.

A Detroit-based filmmaker, writer, & producer, Lara creates bold, female-centered stories exploring women’s experiences with honesty, humor, & social awareness. Her work lives at the intersection of storytelling & cultural commentary—bringing overlooked perspectives to life on screen.

Lara has worked across independent film, television, documentaries, music videos, & commercial productions. She has contributed to projects for platforms including HBO, Netflix, NBC/Peacock, Hulu, Comedy Central, CBS, Disney, & Apple TV+, while films she’s worked on have premiered at major festivals including Sundance, Tribeca, & Toronto.

Lara holds an MFA in directing from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and an MFA in photography & women’s studies from the University of Florida—an academic foundation reflecting the thoughtful lens she brings to her work.

Beyond filmmaking, Lara is deeply committed to building creative community. As co-founder of The Film Lab , a Detroit micro-cinema & creative hub, she has helped cultivate a space where filmmakers & artists gather to screen work, collaborate, & create. The initiative has received support from Knight Foundation and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.

Her work often explores contemporary womanhood, gender politics, and reproductive rights—often through a sharp comedic or satirical lens. Among her current projects is dark comedy pilot “V in the D,” about a single mother navigating life in Detroit.

Recognized as a Kresge Arts in Detroit Fellow, Lara continues shaping Detroit’s creative landscape through film, storytelling, & community building.

Every woman carries a story …
and some women dedicate their lives to telling them.

Lara Sfire is one of those women.

She wears her story with vision, courage, and the quiet power of a woman who knows the importance of her voice—and the voices of others.
