I grew up reading about hunting lore and legend (Fred Bear, Saxton Pope, Art Young) and listening to hunting stories told around the campfire. Hunting has always been as much about adventure and experience and survival as anything else. I mean, the kill is the reason for taking a bush plane into Unalakleet, landing on a gravel bar and floating a river for nine days. But the whole process—the gear

selection and packing, the travel, all of the pieces that need to come together, and all of the hard work and effort hiking and setting up camp and dealing with the weather—that’s all a part of the experience. The roots and tradition of hunting have always been important to me. I want KUIU to continue to contribute to the tradition through storytelling. I want KUIU to be a source of inspiration by living and breathing Mountain Hunting. I also want our customers to know they can absolutely and unconditionally trust KUIU. I want them to know we live and breath Mountain Hunting, that we do our homework and research, that we’re out there hunting in and testing all of our products— in the hardest and most demanding of environments and conditions. In fact, the standard against which we measure and test KUIU is sheep hunting. Sheep hunting is an expedition. Weather and storms are always an issue, temperatures swing wildly, and it’s often wet and cold. The landscape is harsh and unforgiving—steep rock fields, glaciers, roaring river crossings, often requiring bouldering and sidehilling. Sheep hunting requires huge investments in terms of money and time. It requires massive amounts of physical and mental preparation. It’s the pinnacle of Mountain Hunting, and as such, it’s the most demanding on gear. That’s why we exist, to build gear that meets these demands.

GSCO’s own traveled from his home state of Colorado to hunt with good friends in California. This area is known for giant wild boars that produce unreal sizes of tusks and bodies due to the mild climate and abundance of agriculture.

It didn’t take long before TJ was able to anchor a big tusker to take back home.

Lucky enough to get a break from guiding to hunt for himself, Trevor Marques concentrated all his efforts on filling his Nevada Archery Mule Deer tag.

He would spend the next six days focusing on a single giant buck he had spotted on the first morning.

In Trevor’s words:

“This morning was a little different. I sat across from him in the morning, feeding and watched him bed with a handful of other bucks. As he was bedded, I worked my way in to try and get a shot. Before I got set up, he jumped up and all of the deer ran in my direction. I watched the lead buck run below and quickly got a range at 50 yards. Two bucks later, the deer I was after came into the shooting lane, stopping just long enough to get a shot. The hit was perfect, and he only went about 70 yards.”

The big velvet muley would push the tape over the magical 200” mark.

David Puffer beat the odds and drew his once-in-a-lifetime Utah desert bighorn sheep tag with only 18 points.

Wanting to stack the odds in his favor, he reached out to the crew at West Desert Hunt Company to help turn filling this tag into a reality.

With multiple scouting trips and lots of time behind the glass, we spotted this ram two days before the season opener. We kept tabs on him over the next couple of days, and when opening morning arrived, we thought it was game on. But, as they often do, the ram had other plans.

"We anxiously scoured the country all day and had no luck finding him. The next morning, we made the decision to go back and give it another go. We spent the better part of the day looking for him but couldn’t spot him. Just as we were about to call it a day and started to pack up from our glassing point, we heard some rocks start to roll. Like a ghost out of nowhere, here came this ram and three others chasing a hot ewe."

David quickly scrambled to get into position, and as the ram turned broadside at just over 200 yards, a shot rang out, anchoring him in his tracks.

We had made the right call to target this old, mature ram as he stretched the tape to 170”, making it the largest desert ram taken in the state that year.

This Memorial Day, we remember that our freedom endures because of the fearless warfighters who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to this great country — and because of the Gold Star Families who carry the burden of that loss with them every day.

This weekend, we honor our fallen.

Justin Walker hit the mountains of Utah with his bow in hand, looking for a big velvet muley buck.

It was a tough, hot hunt, and with time winding down, he finally found the buck he had come all this way for.

Proving that patience beats pressure every time, he backed out of his first two stalking attempts because the setup just wasn’t right. The third time was a charm, and he was able to slip in on the sleeping giant and put an arrow in him. A short 50 yards later, Justin was able to lay his hands on the buck of a lifetime with just one day left in his hunt.

On this trip, Justin wore a combo of the Attack Pants and Tiburon Hybrid Hoodie.

"With an Oregon blacktail buck tag in my pocket, we hit the mountains the week before the season opener to do some scouting. We had hiked to a great glassing spot about 4 miles from the truck. Right before sunset, we glassed this buck up with a few of his buddies and knew he was our number one target. Anxiously waiting out the week, we found ourselves on that same k**b at first light, hoping he would return. Sure enough, shortly after sunrise, he and a group of bachelor bucks fed out across the hill from us. Already set up, I dialed in the range and got ready for the shot. A slow exhale and a steady trigger squeeze later, my second blacktail buck was down.

"For this hunt, I chose the Women’s Pro Brush Pant, Gila Hoodie, StrongFleece 190, and the Pro Bino Harness."

Today, KUIU is proud to announce our newest veteran nonprofit partnership with The Commando Initiative, founded by longtime Special Operations veteran Kurt Casey. Born from firsthand experience, The Commando Initiative removes every barrier and fully funds restorative outdoor experiences for members of the Special Operations community — no cost, no bureaucracy, no performance requirements. Just quiet, connection, and clarity in the field.

This spring, their first mission delivered exactly that: a memorable turkey hunt in the Mississippi hardwoods for a decorated Sergeant Major. The result was more than a harvest — it was a reset. We’re honored to support this powerful continuation of service.
