I grew up reading about hunting lore and legend (Fred Bear, Saxton Pope, Art Young) and listening to hunting stories told around the campfire. Hunting has always been as much about adventure and experience and survival as anything else. I mean, the kill is the reason for taking a bush plane into Unalakleet, landing on a gravel bar and floating a river for nine days. Without a tag and the hunt you

wouldn’t have a reason to be there. But the whole process—the gear selection and packing, the travel, all of the pieces that need to come together, and all of the hard work and effort hiking and setting up camp and dealing with the weather—that’s all a part of the experience. The roots and tradition of hunting have always been important to me. I want KUIU to continue to contribute to the tradition through storytelling. I want KUIU to be a source of inspiration by living and breathing Mountain Hunting. I also want our customers to know they can absolutely and unconditionally trust KUIU. I want them to know we live and breath Mountain Hunting, that we do our homework and research, that we’re out there hunting in and testing all of our products— in the hardest and most demanding of environments and conditions. In fact, the standard against which we measure and test KUIU is sheep hunting. Sheep hunting is an expedition. Weather and storms are always an issue, temperatures swing wildly, and it’s often wet and cold. The landscape is harsh and unforgiving—steep rock fields, glaciers, roaring river crossings, often requiring bouldering and sidehilling. Sheep hunting requires huge investments in terms of money and time. It requires massive amounts of physical and mental preparation. It’s the pinnacle of Mountain Hunting, and as such, it’s the most demanding on gear. That’s why we exist, to build gear that meets these demands.

First archery tag of the season punched!🙏🏼

Evander Holyfield (had his ear almost ripped off from another buck in a fight) is a buck that was on the hit list last season but no luck turning him up. He absolutely blew up this year and quickly became the number 1. I was lucky enough to draw this tag again and was pumped to get back up to OR!

After a 4 hour stalk, I was able to close into 53 yards and get a great arrow in this legend!

He’s my biggest buck with a bow to date and I’m beyond grateful to hang my 2026 tag on this stud.

Can’t thank Hannah Mabbott and the boys enough for helping with everything and I cannot WAIT to show yall the content my boy Mat Miller got on this one! The video will be up soon so stay tuned!!

KUIU hunter, Tyler M. of Cheyenne, WY watched a good bull work the edge of a central Idaho basin at twilight. He’d seen bulls here the year before while chasing mule deer. Bull tag in hand, he put in the prep, and on opening day a pack of wolves cut through the drainage and ran that bull, and the cows with him, clean off the mountain. The herd scattered, and the days that followed were a ghost hunt.

Studies say the scatter should’ve been temporary. Elk flee chaos, not the country. They move to cover, settle in for a few days, and resume. So why didn’t they come back?

The North American Bison is a true conservation success story. Driven nearly to the brink of extinction in the late 18th century due to government policies and commercial overhunting, it's believed that there were once as many as 60 million bison roaming the west. Those numbers were reduced to somewhere between 500 to 1,000 animals.

Thanks to conservation efforts led by private ranchers, conservationists, and the government, they were saved from extinction. Today, it's estimated that there are over half a million bison, primarily on private ranches, and roughly 10% of that population is managed in about a dozen recognized free-ranging wild herds.

These tags are tough to come by and are considered a true once-in-a-lifetime hunting opportunity.

Mike Nelson was lucky enough to fulfill a childhood dream of harvesting one of these icons of the west. Battling the relentless Alaskan weather that never seemed to let up, he was finally able to take this great bull after a week of tough hunting.

In Mike's words, "You know they're big animals, but you truly don’t realize just how big they are until you walk up on one, and it makes a moose look small!"

Gear used on this trip included the Yukon TR Raingear, Superdown Pro jacket, and the Pro Merino 200 top and bottom base layers.

Zak Kurtzhal and his buddy Darrin Cooper packed up their gear to head to Montana for a private land DIY archery mule deer hunt last November.

The country they're hunting in is vast and wide open, requiring them to cover a lot of ground in search of these big, reclusive muley bucks.

On day 3, the duo glassed up a stud buck with a big dropper coming off his right beam. This is the buck they had come all this way for.

After a lengthy stalk, Zak set up and, with a single well-placed arrow, the buck was down.

This is the kind of deer we all dream of—a big 4x4 frame with deep forks and that ever-rare big dropper.
