Yes, you can spearfish perch in Wisconsin. And yes, it’s as fun as it sounds!

This hunt was a first for me… my 15-perch limit that is! I almost didn’t want to post from this hunt because I have never seen schools of jumbo perch this thick before. I’ve been spearfishing the Bay of Green Bay for three years, and this is the first time I’ve limited out 15 jumbos.

Late October into November is one of the best windows of the year. Jumbo perch push into shallow water to fatten up for winter. You can find them in just about any bay on the Bay of Green Bay that still has w**d cover. The water’s cold this time of year, so you’ll want at least a 4–5mm wetsuit with a hood, booties and gloves. Yes, it’s cold at first. But that melts away once you’re down there for a while.

There’s no phone. No talking to your buddy. No getting bored. You’re locked in the entire time. It’s that edge-of-your-stand feeling you get when you hear a deer walking in, except you can hold onto it for hours.

Fishing from the top side in the fall can be great, but you’re fighting wind and waves the whole time. Underwater, you’re out of all of it.

Right now it’s my favorite thing to do outdoors. I’ll be in the water until the rut really picks up, then switch over to bow hunting.

Haven’t tried it yet? Read my article on why spearfishing perch is the next big sport in the Great Lakes on the Door Born fishing blog at doorborn.com. Link in bio.

If you haven’t checked out the new mountain bike trails at Peninsula State Park yet, you are seriously missing out.

For the longest time, the park only had a hodgepodge of older off-road paths rather than a dedicated system for mountain bikers. But thanks to a massive collaborative effort with the DNR, the Friends group, local mountain bikers, and professional trail builders, they completely transformed the park. It’s become miles of purpose-built singletrack featuring great flow, berms, and natural rock lines!

A couple friends and I took them out for a spin recently, and I was genuinely blown away by how much work and craftsmanship went into building and maintaining these trails. Every corner feels intentional, and it lets you see parts of the park you just don’t get to experience from the main roads.
Since I have a bit more of a limited mountain biking background, we stuck to the green and blue trails, and they were an absolute blast. I skipped the black diamond runs, but even on the easier loops, it gave us a good workout.

If you love riding and find yourself up in Door County, put this on your list.

There’s no better way to see the fall colors in Peninsula State Park than from out on Nicolet Bay.

Stand-up paddleboarding is an awesome way to explore the lakes, bays, and shorelines up here, but you definitely have to respect the weather. When the water is flat, SUP is as easy, peaceful, and relaxing as it gets. But if the wind kicks up, it can turn dangerous and miserable real fast.

My wife and I learned that lesson the hard way in the past, getting stuck fighting a nasty headwind just to make it back to shore. Ever since then, we made a strict rule: we only drop the boards in on low-wind or dead-calm days.

When the conditions line up like they did on this trip, being out on the water, soaking up the unusual October sun, and watching the changing leaf colors from a completely different perspective is hard to beat.

If you’re bringing a board up to Door County this fall, just keep a close eye on the wind forecast before you push off. When you get a calm day, there’s truly no better spot to be.

Jacksonport Farmers Market last one of the season!

Not only this the last Farmers Market in Jacksonport, but it’s the last Farmers Market of the season for me! It’s been a long ride since the second week of May! I’m very thankful for this Market and the many others I attended. I get to meet customers from all over the world who are visiting Door County.

I started Door born six years ago because I believe that our region is truly unique and was not being represented authentically by any clothing brands. It’s wonderful to be able to share the place I love, and the vision for my brand with so many people.

if you’re in the area, come stop by for the last market of the year. I’ll be here until 1 PM.

For my birthday last week, my wife and I decided to take the Mobile Store on a mini getaway to Peninsula State Park.

The weather was as good as it gets in October. The leaves were just starting to turn, the water was as calm as glass, and biking through the trails with the warm breeze was an absolute blast.

Growing up here in Door County, I’ve visited Peninsula State Park countless times, but I had never actually camped there. We thought it would be a blast to bring the mobile store since we don’t have a camper and last time we tent camped, my wife was woken up by a raccoon sniffing our tent. So we loaded up our gear, pulled into our spot nested right next to Nicolet Bay, and settled in for the night.

Honestly, we were blown away by how great the experience was. The campsite was incredibly quiet, the neighbors were nice and respectful, and the bathroom and shower facilities were hands-down some of the cleanest we’ve seen anywhere in the state park system.

We spent the evening enjoying the stars above Nicolet Bay, and the next day just soaking up every bit of unusual October sun. If you’ve been thinking about planning a trip up here or haven’t camped in Peninsula State Park yet, we couldn’t recommend it more.
