The first large industry to locate on the Peninsula after World War II was Crown Fastener Division of Coats & Clark Inc. In 1946 purchasing the abandoned Hampton Roads Port of Embarkation laundry in Newport News, Crown Zipper brought in management officials from its Warren, R.I. zipper plant and began hiring. For 40 years Coats & Clark operated the plant in Newport News.
The the factory closed in 1987.
