1. Wishcycling & donation dumping. People drop off items that should’ve been trashed or recycled, and stores get stuck processing them—so some still hit the floor “as-is.”
2. High-volume, imperfect pricing. Staff follow broad pricing systems and rush through thousands of items—mistakes and oddball pricing happen.
3. “Try to sell it” first. Many nonprofits aim to monetize almost everything to fund programs; unsold goods later get routed to outlet/bulk channels—so borderline items still get tagged.
4. Craft/upcycle demand signals. Jars, cans, and random containers do sell to crafters and zero-waste folks, which encourages pricing even when they look like recycling bin material.

Cleaning out closets and found this blast from the past…my first magazine job was as an assistant editor at Ebony Man magazine in Chicago. I replied to a job listing in the NEWSPAPER CLASSIFIEDS, ya’ll, and I just knew they were going to throw my resume in the circular file. But lo and behold, they called me in for interviews and I got the gig, which undoubtedly changed the course of my life.
