Two friends (who are also clients) like to challenge themselves and each other by making the same quilts. They usually choose a pattern together, then each choose their own fabrics, so it is fun to see how different fabric choices make the quilts look different. This past year, they chose the pattern from legitkits. Since the pattern relies on specific colors for shading, they bought the kits, using the suggested fabric colors. Sue C. brought hers to me first, and asked for the dimensionality of the machine to be emphasized. She also added a black border to hers (top quilt in the photo). Rita F. brought hers to me second, and said “I want mine to look different from Sue’s”. Challenge accepted! There wasn’t much I could do different on the machines, but the backgrounds were a different story. The pattern is of a vintage sewing machine set into a sewing table, with what looks like a wall behind it. So with Sue’s I wanted the wall to look like classic wallpaper. It took me some time with Rita’s to come up with another design that had a vintage wallpapery feel, but that didn’t look or feel like Sue’s. I love how the choices each quilter made, and the quilting, made such a distinctive pattern look as different as they do.
