Descalza

Descalza Descalza is a young, soul-touching, trendsetting, frijoles and fries eating, Spanglish speaking, rebel. Descalza is for the ally.

Descalza is a handcrafted, made to measure, clothing brand where we collaborate with artisans in Latino America to create unique statement pieces here in the U.S. The one who is fighting against all stereotypes and misconceptions Latinos embrace. They are lawyers, teachers, actors, designers, engineers, US ambassadors, poets, entrepreneurs, and more. They are the product of their family's hard-wor

k and the adversity they've had to overcome. Descalza is for the rebel who takes pride in who she is and whose she is. The one who didn't grow up in a bicultural home, but at some point chose to become one. They paid attention in Spanish class not because they wanted to pass a test, but because they fell in love with the language and culture. Descalza is for the ally who is fighting for the rights and inclusiveness of all individuals even when the law already favors their side. Descalza, meaning "barefooted" or "without shoes", is meant to serve as a reminder to all Latinos of where we began and who is still at home. As we continue to move forward and pave a new direction for our community, we never forget our most humbling citizens from our homes: our artisans. They capture depth, transparency, tradition and value through each loop they knit, each stitch they sew, and each row they weave. Conveniences, like shoes, inhibit them from using their magic to create and design. That's why we source our fabrics from them. Our artisans, sometimes the poorest of the poor, remind us no matter how far we move forward, we never forget to look back, lend a hand, and thank our pioneers.

English wasn’t an easy language for me, especially when there was so much pressure to learn it quickly so I could help translate for my parents.

That’s why sewing became the way I learned to express myself.

There was no pressure to get it right. No expectation that I had to be fluent or perfect. I could simply follow the movement of my hands and the needle, letting them say what I couldn’t always put into words.

We were told que calladita nos vemos más bonita.

But I love wearing clothes that are so vibrant. I get the chance to talk about the artisans behind the pieces and how I’m connected to them. 💜

Trends can come and go but traditions are passed down from generation to generation.

For me this is what fashion means. It’s how we stay connected to our traditions and the people behind them. 💜

If you’re in the RTP area, or don’t mind making the trip to Durham, we’d love to have you apply!

✨ Applications are now open. Find the link and more information in our bio!
