A New Season. ๐Ÿ‚ John Moore (aka Juan Mas)

A changing season brings a new rhythm. After a recent trip to Vancouver Island with the Outerknown crew, co-founder & creative director, John Moore (John Moore (aka Juan Mas)), reflects on getting outside and embracing the seasonal shift.

โ€œItโ€™s that time of year again. If youโ€™re anything like me, youโ€™re feeling over-scheduled in every way, and all I really want to do is get outside, from the ocean to higher elevations. Breathe the freshest air and let natureโ€™s cold plunge get the blood flowing.

Getting up to Vancouver Island with the Outerknown gang last month had been on my bucket list for a long time, and it did not disappoint. Our local friends are living the lives I daydream about when designing, and we got to experience a little of it with them over a few action-packed days. Early morning surfs, long days outside, exploring empty islands, and a 10pm channel crossing back to the dock with the northern glow of daylight still barely hanging on.

And I love the layers this time of year. Whatever the day or conditions demand, thereโ€™s something about getting dressed for it that I love. I definitely needed this little sojourn, and the fresh perspective that comes with a change of season. My favorite time of year at Outerknown.โ€

When Kelly Slater got word that Sheldon Simkus was heading off on a strike mission, he laced him up with some gear from his signature collection and a few new Slater Designs shapes to test.

Eventually, a field report came throughโ€ฆturns out he was scoring, and luckily for us, he got it all on film.

The best surf trips often come together at the last minute, but the anticipation builds long before. Surfers like Sheldon Simkus are constantly watching the forecasts, waiting for the right swell, winds, and conditions to line up. And when everything comes together, itโ€™s time to pack the boards and make a move.

Last month, Kelly Slater got word Shelly was chasing a swell in the Indonesia, so he laced him up with some gear from his signature collection and a few fresh boards to test on the trip.

Every now and then, you come across a few words that can shift your perspective, spark curiosity, and inspire you to keep growing, exploring, and evolving.

We thought itโ€™d be worth sharing a few that resonated with us. So, we areย starting a new series called ๐™‡๐™ž๐™ซ๐™š ๐™๐™ช๐™ก๐™ก๐™ฎ, to inspire us to get out there and beyond the ordinary.

Thatโ€™s what it means to Find Your Outerknown. Getting out of your everyday, following curiosity, and chasing the things that make your body glow, your mind buzz, and your spirit sing.

First up: The Summer Day, by Mary Olliver.



The Summer Day

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?

This grasshopper, I meanโ€”
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and downโ€”
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.

Welcome back, Woolaroo โ€“ our naturally warm, exceptionally soft fleece made from 100% recycled wool.

Wool has been the steadfast companion of those enduring the elements for millennia, but somewhere down the line, the industry turned to plastic-based polyester fleece. We chose to stick with the real thing.
ย 
The magic happens in Tuscany, Italy, with our friends at โ€“ an Italian company owned by the Mantellassi family who have been perfecting circular wool since the 1940s. Italian artisans carefully separate the fibers, sort them by hand according to color, and mechanically spin them into fresh yarns through their local Tuscan supply chain. The result is a 100% recycled wool, thoughtfully crafted into something worth holding onto.

Chasing new feelings. Kelly Slater

With the jersey behind him in Tahiti, Kelly Slater was back to chasing whatโ€™s next, experimenting with new board designs and different fin setups free surfing in Tahiti. That constant evolution is what makes Kelly, Kelly โ€“ always moving forward, always drawing new lines.

And for Todd Glaser, there was no better way to capture it than from underneath it all โ€“ a different perspective on the subtle details, movements and feelings.

Todd shares:
โ€œShooting surfing underwater, in my opinion, is the most rare and beautiful way to show surfing. There are not a lot of places where the water is clear enough to shoot underwater, and getting to be in a place like Tahiti is extra special. When watching the footage, you always see something new โ€“ a fish swimming by, the way Kelly places his hand in the water, how the water flows off the rake of the fins, or the bubbles exploding from a passing tube.

A lot of photographers and filmers always shoot above water so they can show the subjectโ€™s face, Kelly is an artist himself. He and I have worked so much together he trusts me to capture him in a more abstract and unique way. All the imagery we make is a collaboration of our creative minds, actions and visions together.โ€

From Dad mode to GOAT mode.

Before Kelly Slater was sneaking out of Teahupoโ€™o pits to take down Gabriel Medina at the 2026 Outerknown Tahiti Pro, Kelly was just trying to sneak out the back door.

Todd Glaser shares:
โ€œKelly really wanted to show himself and the world how much he loves surfing, and he knows what it takes to not only win a heat, but to have fun in the water. Leading up to the event heโ€™d been on the Gold Coast and hadnโ€™t spent much time in heavy surf, so I think more than anything he was excited at the possibility of riding an amazing wave.

When he is inspired to surf, he gets this look in his eye and thatโ€™s usually when the guitar comes out before a heat. He channels all those emotions into what some might call a distraction, but itโ€™s him getting into the zone so once he hits the water heโ€™s laser focused on whatโ€™s right in front of him. Kelly has this uncanny ability to live in the most present moment and elevate himself and others in the process.โ€
