I'm so excited to see Outsider Gear Exchange, whose focus is offering gently used outdoor gear, opening in Harrisonburg. We're thrilled that a local Elkton artist has chosen us to sell their colorful, one of a kind paintings. These are not prints, every one of them is an original. We've had lots of inquiries on this building but we're still holding out a bit longer in hopes of a store moving in. Call me old fashioned but I love a bustling downtown with storefronts, the way it used to be with "the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker". While I would love to see a shop go into the space, we will soon consider renting it for a service based business if we don't find a store fit. We do have some flexibility on terms for someone setting up a shop so if you have an existing business that you'd like to expand on or have a solid business plan in place for a new business, feel free to message. If you know anyone in a surrounding town who is looking to expand their business, please share! Thanks!! :)

When I got to the store yesterday, I was a bit disheartened by what I saw on Spotswood Avenue. The street was filled with so much trash from the parade. There were plastic candy wrappers everywhere and candy smashed into the road from having been run over. In addition to candy wrappers, the bench in front of my shop had smashed caramels under it and empty drink bottles and cigarette butts around it. In this day and age of cancel culture, I'm reluctant to cry foul but I have to share my thoughts. I feel like cleaning up trash after an event is a great organic way to teach kids about leaving a place better than they found it. Leaving trash on the ground is most certainly not patriotic and considering it runs straight into the Shenandoah, it's just not great. I spent a few minutes before I opened sweeping up what I could and spent about 20 minutes after work sweeping up more of the trash on the sidewalks and in the street. I never mind tidying up the streets and sidewalk and am even more encouraged to do so when others are pitching in to do their part but my husband and I have spent many hours cleaning up after the parades in the past and are losing steam to keep cleaning up after others. We love Elkton and we know others do too. I imagine I'll touch a nerve with some people but I'm not requesting that candy not be thrown, I'm just hoping that people might take an extra second or two to look around them and tidy up before they head out.

Yesterday, I went down to the river to look for "treasure". Yes, depending on who you are, treasure has different meanings. I managed to find these two sections of old bottles, one from Elkton Lithia and the other from ???? Does anyone know where the smaller piece is from? Is it just a different variation from Elkton Lithia (which seems logical)? I know it's unlikely I'll ever find a whole one so if anyone has one that they're looking to sell for a reasonable price, I'd love to hear more.
