The Thailand To NewYork Connection 🚊

“The process of building the brand
I originally thought of making a board brand in 2019, but sat on the impulse instead and played around with different brand concepts over the years. 2024 comes around and Jacob and I have been skating on a team together for a few years at the time but were soon to be free agents, and so I decided to go ahead and do what I've been really wanting to do. Then in July, 2024, I thought of the name "HALFCHILD" and made a dedicated folder in my hard drive and went to work. I reached out to Jacob and told him about the idea, and of course he was on-board. Hit up the Chiang Mai connection, Kanchanon, got him on, and the founding team was assembled. I made the first logos and artwork in November, made sample stickers, found a cheap VX2000 on Shopee, bought a Kapkur fisheye, a pack of 5 MiniDV tapes, and we began filming for the video. Since then its been 6 months of filming for the video, sampling and making boards and t-shirts, and also working my day job. Then on May 17th, 2025, we launched the brand and premiered our video "Hello World" at Tightland Skate Shop to an overwhelmingly supportive crowd. This is just the beginning. To all the halfchildren; WE SEE YOU.”

ONLY SKATE SHOP IN NEWYORK WITH BARRIERS NY

Barriers designer Steven Barter, clothes are more than just clothes. They are walking billboards, and teaching tools. “Clothing is really powerful, because we always need it,” he tells Vogue. “Everybody always wants to wear what’s new and fashionable, but we wanted to make it purposeful.” Sure, his streetwear line of hoodies, tees, and sweats looks cool on first glance, but they are always rooted in a bigger purpose, which is to share untold Black histories in a way that today’s youth can easily digest; He does so by taking specific historical topics or figures that they may be unfamiliar with, then amplifying them via bold, eye-catching collages and portraits on the clothing. “There’s a lot of kids out here confusing prominent figures like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X,” Barter says. “They don’t know the difference, so my job is to teach them. And I found a way to make it cool.”
