This Nine-banded armadillo was 22lbs!

Armadillos are really unique wildlife. They are great diggers and like groundhogs can become a serious problem when they burrow beneath structures or repeatedly damage lawns and landscaping.

My professorial removal focuses on solving the conflict, not removing wildlife unnecessarily. Protect the property, respect the resource.

This armadillo will be reused and preserved. Its hide and shell will be tanned to make something really cool so it doesn’t go to waste!

Big Brown Bats are an important part of our Kansas ecosystem! 🦇 They help control insect populations by feeding on moths, beetles, and other nighttime insects.

While bats are beneficial, they should never be handled bare-handed. If one finds its way into your home, safe removal and checking for possible entry points is the best approach.

🦇 Respect the wildlife. Protect the property.

🐄 A South Poll cowhide has officially hit the shop!

This beautiful South Poll hide came to The Tanner’s Touch to be transformed from a raw hide into a finished hair-on cowhide rug.

A hide this size is no small project. From fleshing and cleaning to tanning, oiling, breaking, softening, and final finishing, there are a lot of hours of hands-on work between what you see today and the finished rug.

That’s one of the things I love about this work. Every hide is different, and every one has its own character. Instead of treating it like just another hide going through an assembly line, I get to work with it individually through each stage of the process.

My goal with The Tanner’s Touch is to help keep the craft of hands-on hide tanning alive while giving people another way to preserve an animal and turn something that could have gone to waste into something that can be appreciated for years to come.

I’ll be documenting this South Poll hide along the way, so follow The Tanner’s Touch to watch the transformation from raw cowhide to finished rug.

Every animal in this reel has a story.

None of these animals were taken for waste. Every one was salvaged—whether it was a nuisance animal, roadkill, or another situation where it would have otherwise been discarded.

I believe in respecting the resource by using what God has provided whenever possible. Hides, skulls, bones, and other natural materials can be preserved and given a second life instead of ending up in a landfill.

This is more than trapping—it’s conservation, craftsmanship, and respect for the resource.

This is why a good dog is worth his weight in gold.

Atlantis helps safely pin the coyote, allowing me to get it properly restrained. Once it’s under control and no longer actively resisting, it can be handled quickly, humanely, and with less stress for everyone involved—including the animal.

This is one of those parts of trapping most people never get to see. A trained dog, proper equipment, and calm handling all work together to make the process as safe and efficient as possible.
