You’ve seen them on the water. But the story behind them goes back further than you’d think. 🌊🛥️

1. They date back to 1890.
People started building floating homes around Presque Isle and Erie Bay over 130 years ago — long before it was anything close to a lifestyle.

2. They started as a necessity, not a novelty.
The first houseboats were built by people who couldn’t afford conventional housing. They found a spot on the water and made it work. What began out of necessity turned into something that stuck around for generations — and that heritage is still part of what makes the community unique today.

3. They used to be scattered everywhere.
For decades, houseboats popped up wherever someone could find a good spot around the bay. Layers of regulation eventually consolidated them all to Horseshoe Pond, near the Coast Guard station on Presque Isle — where they still sit today.
