Remembering Billie Burke today. We were pleased to meet her niece and great-niece. Great-niece Looked just like Auntie Glinda did in 1910 when this photo was taken.

Today we remember 'Glinda' aka Billie Burke on her heavenly birthday. đź’ś We honor the actress whose grace, wit, and unmistakable voice carried her from the early days of Broadway to one of the most iconic roles in American film history. Born August 7, 1884, in Washington, D.C., she grew up in a theatrical family and actually spent her childhood traveling through Europe while her father performed in circus and variety shows. That early exposure to stage life shaped her poise and timing, qualities that later defined her career.

Burke became a celebrated Broadway star in the 1910s, known for her light comedic touch and elegant presence. She transitioned into silent films and then sound pictures with ease, appearing in comedies, dramas, and sophisticated drawing‑room pieces throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Her marriage to impresario Florenz Ziegfeld connected her to the center of American entertainment, and after his death she continued working steadily to support their daughter, Patricia.

Her most enduring role arrived in 1939 when she stepped into the part of Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz. With her shimmering gown, gentle voice, and serene confidence, Burke created a character that became woven into the fabric of American childhood. Though she was already in her mid‑50s, her performance carried a youthful warmth that made Glinda timeless.

Burke continued acting into the 1940s, earning an Academy Award nomination for Merrily We Live and appearing in films like Topper and Father of the Bride. Offscreen, she was known for her kindness, humor, and devotion to family and friends.

Billie Burke passed away in 1970 at age 85. She certainly left a lasting imprint on stage and screen — whose portrayal of Glinda remains one of the most beloved images in American film... what do you remember about Billie?
