I’ve always thought it would be fun to own luxury handbags, but then the price tags make me feel light-headed. So I’ve been content with a caution sign yellow fake Goyard from a rummage sale and a 30+ year old real Mulberry from a thrift store run by Florida Episcopalians. But then yesterday at a flea market I spotted a carousel display of plastic blow mold jack-o-lanterns turned into cross body bags by a creative artist named Lisa. So clever, so Halloween-y and so worth $20! Better than a Birkin!

Normally I don’t go in for dolls or “stuffies” of any kind, but I spotted this pumpkin creature staring at me from a booth neighboring mine. And since it’s been a few years since I’ve added anything to my Halloween collection, it wasn’t a difficult decision to purchase him. He’s home now having decided to perch, Humpty Dumpty like, on the collected works of Washington Irving.

I love finding and rescuing embroidery work from certain obscurity. Cross-stitch, crewel, petit point, and needlepoint panels or samplers are all the work of (mostly) women who picked up their projects after dinner and children’s bedtimes. This one, created by Lois in 1980, is beautifully worked on linen, expertly stretched and framed behind glass. It would look charming in a kitchen, pantry or breakfast nook. Now at Bucktrouts, booth 501 in the Ohio Valley Antique Mall.

So often anymore, I can find amazing second hand items at antique malls that are less expensive than similar items at thrift shops. This beautiful 19th century blue and white “Chinese Flowering Pot” deep well platter was just such a find. It has a rim chip which is really only visible on the back, but it was clearly marked on the tag and priced so low that I did a triple take. And shout out to the cashier who made it a point to show it to me before I handed her my money. What item anywhere, especially one over 100 years old, escapes without some kind of ding, dent, crack or chip? I like these things all the more for their perfect imperfections.
