And then you sit down in it bare-headed, with nothing between your head and the heat.

The hat is the oldest part of the ritual and the one that gets left out. It keeps your head cool while the heat works on the rest of you, so you sit longer and step out steady instead of dizzy.

And it protects your hair. That heat is quiet about what it does. Drying the ends, roughing it up, pulling the color out a little at a time. Nobody notices until the color needs doing again sooner than it should.

You sit there feeling wonderful, and the heat is lifting the cuticle, drying the ends, pulling the color out a little at a time. Nobody notices until the color needs doing again sooner than it should.

Grass inside a sauna hat. It’s there on purpose.

Raw undyed wool from small family farms in the Alps. No dyes. No treatments. Nothing added. When wool is handled this lightly, a trace of the meadow stays in it. I could take it out. I’d rather not.

I shape each hat slowly by hand, until the fibers lock into felt. It keeps your head cool in the heat, and your hair protected from it. Add a small initial, needle felted by my hand, if you like. Yours alone.

People ask why I make a hat instead of just handing them a towel.

A towel slides off, goes cold, and does nothing for the heat sitting on your head.
That heat is the reason you get lightheaded, and over time it’s what dries your hair and pulls the color out.

Wool is different. It soaks up the sweat before it runs into your eyes, and it keeps the heat off your head and your hair, so you can sit a little longer and just breathe.
