Picked up a nice wooden cigar box at the thrift store to display these yakasugi tiles. Just finished waxing them. They are perfect for craft, home decor, or art projects - or just to fiddle with (they feel great and are a great tactile distraction). The backs to yakisugi plant hangers charred and brushed. Now all that's left is a coat of tung oil, maybe some wax, and then fastening the iron pot holders to the cedar backs.

Cedar is already weather resistant , but the shou sugi ban and tung oil will not only make the wood out last the iron, but make the grain pop.

🔥 Tonight’s Experiment: Reclaimed Yakisugi Mini Shelves 🪵

Tried something new — these compact display shelves are made entirely from reclaimed pallet wood (and a little cedar), joined without metal, and finished in fire and oil.

The process?

Yakisugi charring

Brushed and burnished grain

Danish oil to deepen the tone

Pegged joinery (no nails, no screws — just wood holding wood)

The result: something simple, fast, and honestly kind of beautiful.
Rustic American bones. Japanese discipline. Each one a little rough, a little refined.

What started as scrap turned into something I wanted to keep for myself. That’s usually a good sign.

These unassuming cavity-nesting birdhouses are crafted from reclaimed pallet wood, charred in the yakisugi tradition, then sealed with a twist on an old Scandinavian formula known as Roslag Mahogany—a blend of pine tar and tung oil once used by Vikings to preserve their ships.
