Despite Gruff Sparty's popularity, one thing has remained unclear: Where did he come from?
Mysteriously appearing on campus in the 1950s from an unknown artist, he was used as an unofficial logo for years with no campus office sure of where he originated.
In the 1970s, he'd be ousted as a university symbol, only to resurface and become officially trademarked in the 1980s.
Though his origin story is filled with mystery, we know this much: Gruff Sparty is a beloved MSU symbol who represents the grit and determination that define what it means to be a Spartan.
