Opinions needed. Machined distressed satin finish at 240 grit vs hand sanded distressed satin at 800 grit... which one?

I'll start this by saying that distressed satin is one of my favorite finishes. That being said... it takes a lot of time, which adds to the cost of a knife. I wanted to try to reduce the time and create a similar product that I felt comfortable offering as a less expensive option. I feel like I'm close, and maybe going a step above 240 grit will do the trick... but I can't get over how those grind lines flare in the right light.

The last two pictures compare the new design with the machine satin vs a Monarch with hand sanded satin.

What are your thoughts?

Picked up where I left off around a year ago. These 5 were sitting on the bench waiting for a date with the surface grinder and then drill press. Heat treat tomorrow if all goes well. Felt good to be back in the shop. More to come.

One of the elusive Vandals will be up for grabs, but for a different reason and in a different way. A member of our local community recently passed in a tragic accident. was in the process of moving from Blacksburg with her wife when she passed away. I had seen her and her family at TOTS a day or so before. I got the news on Monday.

Morgan loved knives. She also loved the Vandal, and constantly asked me when I'd be making more. When got this knife, Morgan asked if she could take pictures of it since she was a photographer. I've included some of those pictures, as well as the knife in its current used state.

We will be selling spots in a live drawing that and I will do at a later TBD date. All proceeds will go to Morgan's wife.

I plan to touch the edge up before it is shipped out. Everything else is as is.

Vandals fresh out of the stonewash. The new rotary platen got some more work in today. I had originally thought the tool rest that comes with the package wouldn't work with my grinder... but I figured it out finally. Human error.

As I continue to learn the new rotary platen, some things about these knives will continue to change. Because of the nature of the rubber belt running beneath the abrasive belt, I'm able to get much more consistent swooping plunges. Also because of the rubber belt, the grinds have a very slight convex.

I'm really excited to start trying some grind variations on the different models I have. I'm also finally looking forward to grinding a chef knife again. I think this platen will make them less mind numbing.

Lots of possibilities... lots to learn.

This small batch of Vandals is almost ready for heat treat. It's kinda crazy to think back to the knives I was making, and just hoping to sell, before and I teamed up for this design. We've come so far!

has received the deposit for the production run. When I have more in terms of a timeline, I'll let you all know. As for now, roughly 4 months. I may offer a set number of pre-orders as they near completion.
