This quilt has won first place in the bedspread-family album category at the 2026 State Fair of Texas, which opens late in September in Dallas. It was designed, pieced and appliquéd by my client Sheila Parry in tribute to family members who have served in various branches of the military. I used various digital designs in gold thread to play up the patriotic theme. Congratulations, Sheila!

It’s quilt show season in North Texas. Cindy Hardgrove’s quilt Well Loved Ladies eclipsed all others this weekend at the Plano (near Dallas) quilt show. These are the 5th and 6th ribbons for the quilt, but its first best of show. It won first in its category. Two other quilts of hers won second and third-place ribbons in this show.

What is remarkable about this quilt is not just the exquisite hand workmanship, but Cindy’s decision to decorate the appliqué her own hand embroidery. The soft color choice of the sashing allows the appliqué to take center stage. And it was a joy to quilt. It’s a sampler, so the quilting is different in each block, and I filled the border with a lot of goodies.

This quilt will be part of an exhibit at the upcoming quilt festival in Houston.

Another client quilt recognized for excellent handwork, Folk Tails From Africa, made by , won a blue ribbon. Congratulations to both!

These many photos are a feast for the eyes: the second of two hand-pieced Baltimore albums I’ve quilted for . Her mother started making the blocks and Carmen completed this one for herself and the previous one for her sister.
Carmen opted not to appliqué swags in the outer border; instead, she asked me to quilt them.
I used a combination of digital and freehand motifs in the blocks. The outer border is all freehand with ruler work. Mother and daughter created two beautiful family heirlooms in these stunning quilts. There’s a video on quilting the first one on Susan Corbett, my YouTube channel.

This is a roundup of ribbon winners that I quilted for clients in the North Texas Quilt Festival in Irving, Texas, on July 30-August 1. First up is a merit quilting ribbon on a hand appliqué quilt I quilted on the fly for Judy O’Connell. Look what happens when you’re not trying hard. OK, the tiny curved crosshatching was painstaking. We love this gorgeous quilt. Look at all those tiny points on her appliqué! There’s a video on quilting it on my YouTube channel Susan Corbett. All I bought at the show were little brushes (for cleaning the bobbin case) and sewing machine oil. 😂
Congratulations on ribbons awarded to Cindy Hardgrove, Elaine Graisher, Peggy Sympson, Cynthia Prewitt, Janice Irick, Carolyn Bowden and Kathy Sibley. Well done.

It took me weeks to quilt this version of Nearly Insane, a huge bed quilt hand pieced by . The pattern, out of print, is known for tiny patches, and Alice upped the ante by making the quilt larger. No beginner, Alice made the blocks in only 10 months. Here’s a clip of quilting one block with an itty bitty center and several photos of my favorite other blocks.
I quilted it lightly, or tried to, because it’s traditional, it’s big and I wanted to let the blocks have center stage.

Here’s what’s on my longarm now: a red and white Nearly Insane quilt made by . As it gets stabilized, I’m gathering ideas on how to quilt it, as well as inspiration to tackle difficult projects of my own.

Kim West hand appliquéd this wall quilt over the past 25 years and upon her triumphant finish, she brought it to me to quilt. I applaud Kim’s bravery in attempting this challenging pattern as much as its completion. Look at the second photo. Wow! I used clear thread to outline-quilt the cats and flora, and then had a great time doing the background with a combination meander. It’s much simpler than it appears: circles, swirls, echo quilting and a few leaves. And the backgrounds and borders were treated as part of the background for simplicity’s sake. It works because of the low contrast in color between background, frame and border. Although it looks like I did trapunto quilting, the puff is created by use of high-loft Quilters Dream wool batting, just one layer. I wonder how many people started but have not finished this pattern.

This quilt will tug at your heart strings and your grandmother’s apron strings. Doesn’t it take you back? I custom quilted it lightly for client Cynthia Prewitt. Various 3D pockets are open and ready to hold whatever she might want to keep in them. I want to crawl onto my grandmother’s lap and drink from her coffee cup. She was my first client back in high school; she actually wore a dress I made for her to church.

This quilt was ideal for a part custom, part overall design scheme, with a flower meander on the pieced bars and a flower/circle background fill. A video of the quilting is up on my YouTube channel. This quilt was made by Mary Ann Thompson.
