Friday Wool Fact: Next stop — the Picker! 🐑

Once our wool has been washed, rinsed and air-dried, it’s ready for the next stage of its journey through the mill: picking.

The picking machine opens and separates the clean wool fibers, breaking apart the clumps that naturally form during washing and drying. This fluffs and loosens the wool and prepares it for the next stage — carding.

Our 1970s drawing shows the picker that was used at the Frankenmuth Woolen Mill at the time. Unlike some of the equipment featured in this series, that particular picker has since been replaced — but the process certainly hasn't!

Wayback Wednesday 🐑

Sometimes the best way to look back is to start right at our front door.

Since opening in October of 1894, the Frankenmuth Woolen Mill has witnessed more than 130 years of Michigan history.

During World War I, the mill produced 66,000 pairs of socks, mitts and leg wraps for American troops and became Frankenmuth's largest employer.

Today, the original mill building remains in use, and much of our historic equipment continues to play a role in what we do.

We're proud to be recognized as Michigan's oldest continuously operating woolen mill — and even prouder that the story that began here in 1894 is still being written today. Find out more about our products and historic mill at www.wool-bedding.com

Friday Wool Fact: There’s one more step before freshly washed wool can dry. 🐑

After the wool has been washed, it moves to the extractor for a final rinse and spin.

Much like the spin cycle of a washing machine, the extractor removes excess water from the wool, finishing the washing portion of its journey through our mill. From here, the clean wool is ready to be air-dried before moving on to the next stage of processing.

This 1970s drawing depicts the extractor used in our mill — another step in the wool-processing story captured in the artwork that lines our hallway.

And just like last week’s equipment, there’s more to this drawing than history. The extractor is still part of our mill today.

Wayback Wednesday 🐑

Sometimes a piece of history finds a new purpose.

During World War I, the Frankenmuth Woolen Mill produced thousands of pairs of wool socks for American troops. This old sock machine is a piece of that chapter in our mill’s history.

More than a century later, the machine has been repurposed as a display table in our store — today holding boxes of our 100% wool dryer balls.

From making wool socks for soldiers to displaying wool products made right here in Frankenmuth today, it’s another little reminder that our history is still very much a part of the mill.

Friday Wool Fact: It all starts with a good wash. 🐑

The first step in processing our wool is cleaning it.

The wool is washed with biodegradable soap and rinsed with fresh water from the Great Lakes — specifically, neighboring Lake Huron. After washing and rinsing, the wool is air-dried before moving on to the next stage of processing.

This drawing from the 1970s depicts the washing stage right here at our mill. It’s one of a series of original drawings that line the hallway to our employee lunch area and illustrate the journey wool takes through the mill.
