Fun Fact Friday got pushed to today 😅. But that's because I went to my second home, Swamp YaYas and hung out with my friends and bought a kit for an upcoming drop spindle class! My friend who will be teaching the class offered me a quick lesson since the class is 3 weeks away and im too excited to wait! It didnt take long to find my rhythm and now im addicted! If you are in the Mandeville, Louisiana area I highly recommend checking out they are always running really fun classes, private lesson and a beautiful selection of yarn!

Now for your fun fact! Did you know archeologists have discovered evidence of drop spindles in the middle east dating back to 5000-9000 BCE. And many believe they are actually far older with evidence suggesting they were used all the way back in the Neolithic period to spin fibers! This was the primary tool used to spin yarn before the invention of the spinning wheel which didnt come until 500-1000 CE. And while the spinning wheel is faster, the drop spindle is still popular due to its portability, you can literally walk and spin yarn (If you're got the coordination, im not even close to that 😆). And the types of spindles vary greatly! Each culture had their own variations based on what worked best for the types of fibers they were working with and what look they want to achieve. With top whorl spindle (pictured above) being better for producing thinner yarn and a bottom whorl producing thicker. Theres so much amazing history behind these seemingly simple tools, I could go on for hours! I hope you enjoyed this fun fact!!!

It's time for Fun Fact Friday, where every Friday I give you an interesting fun fact about crochet and fiber arts!

Today's fun fact, did you know that crochet can NOT be made by a machine?! I'm serious! While knitting machines have been around since 1589, no one has been able to successfully create a machine that can crochet!

The reason is that unlike knitting, where loops stay on the needle, crochet requires a hook to be placed into and pull through specific stitches. Machines just cant mimic the complex hand movements required to create these amazing items. In crochet even the most simple stitch isn't just a loop, each stitch has to be created independently.

If you ever do see a machine made item (most often seen in big box stores or fast-fashion sites) that claims to be crochet, it's actually going to be knit, made by an industrial knitting machine that tries to mimic the appearance of crochet. This is why they can sell those items for so cheap, because it's not actually crochet!

Sadly on the off chance you do find a legit crocheted item in big box stores for cheap, it's because someone was paid a very low & unfair wage to create the item. It's a lot of the reason why crochet items cost so much, it takes a person many hours to learn & create these complex items that many times look so simple.

So anytime you come across a crocheted item take a moment to admire it and know that a real person put a lot of love and effort into creating it!

Lastest finished order! And hes ready for his new home! This Toothless dragon was a custom order, customer requested for the head to be weighted so I added weighted beads and was able to get him up to 1.5 pounds before I ran out of room 😆. All together he is nearly 3 pounds!! I love him so much and now want one for myself, he's so soft and cuddly!

My sons teacher reached out to me at the beginning of November asking if I could make beanies for both 1st grade classes. Also could I make each beanie match pictures the kids had colored. I said absolutely! It was a challenge and took almost a whole month. 215,280 stitches later, I got it done and they came out so good! The kids loved them and that made every moment of work worth it! 🤗
