Born in Hamilton, Scotland, James Allan settled in Fredericksburg in 1739 and became one of the town's earliest master joiners and cabinetmakers. His finely crafted furniture reflected the quality, precision, and tradition that Scottish artisans were known for throughout the colonial era.
While his name may not be as widely recognized today, Allan's craftsmanship helped establish Fredericksburg as a growing center of skilled trades and lasting workmanship.

Before earning the title "Father of the U.S. Navy," John Paul Jones spent time right here in Fredericksburg.
Born near Dumfries, Scotland, Jones first visited the city in 1761 to join his older brother, William, who had established himself as a tailor. During his time here, he laid the foundation for the remarkable naval career that would make him one of America's greatest Revolutionary War heroes.
