Debi’s story….
On Sunday, July 5th my husband and I, along with my brother and sister-in-law were in a random boating accident in Moses Lake, Washington.
What was supposed to be a relaxing boat ride on a beautiful 85° sunny day turned into tragedy. We were just there for the weekend visiting family and then our lives changed.
An out of control jet ski hit our boat, ejecting me into the water, and I sustained internal life-threatening injuries, including 11 broken ribs on the left-hand side, a collapsed lung, a broken scapula on the left-hand side, which has made my mobility on my left arm limited. My right arm elbow was completely dislocated and outside of my body. I looked pretty gross with a stretched radial nerve that has caused my right hand to be completely disabled at this time. I also sustained lacerated kidney spleen and liver, which caused internal bleeding. I was life flighted to Spokane, Washington to the closest trauma center, which was an hour and a half away from where my brother lives. I spent 18 days in the hospital having multiple surgeries to correct injuries.
My brother also sustained broken ribs, laceration on his head concussion and was thrown in the water and spent several days in the ICU along with my sister in law, who was life flighted to Seattle for her injuries. She needed a complete in total facial reconstruction surgery for multiple broken facial bones and dislocated eye socket. They are both resting from their injuries and surgeries at home in Moses Lake, Washington.
I am now home here in North Carolina since July 29th. resting recuperating and it’s going to be a very slow journey and process getting back independence and mobility in my arms and hands. Currently all basic functions restroom in and out of bed and dressing are still a family affair.
Though I’m still in a lot of pain and pain management is key I am so very grateful to be alive and breathing. If it wasn’t for the expertise in quick action of the emergency response team in Moses Lake, Washington, I don’t think I would’ve survived.
We never know when a moment will change us forever. My only word I have right now is grateful.
