Teressa here:

Well, it's been exactly a year since we closed the doors of Next to New for good. There have been adjustments and more than a little sadness at losing the daily opportunity to spend time with you all.

On a happy note, though, we house-sat for a month in Key West and traveled to Charlotte and Tampa to see our daughters and their families. That's one upside to retirement—you don't have to schedule someone to cover your work if you want to travel...and you can stay gone as long as you want.

I've run into some of you (mostly in thrift stores) and it's wonderful to know that everyone seems to be doing well.

Just know I still treasure the wonderful memories of our years together and you all still feel like family to me.

Take care and let's stay in touch, shall we?

Love always (and I do mean always!)

Teressa

Mr. Butter update: This is the post I hoped I'd never have to write. Things did not go well at Mr. Butter's vet visit. After several days of daily trips to the vet for IV fluids and then the subcutaneous treatments here at home, we had expected that his test results would show improvement. Instead, they were worse, much worse.

He hasn't been eating and has lost weight. He's dehydrated even though he's getting the sub-q treatments. His red blood cell count has doubled. He's in acute renal failure.

There's nothing to do but let him go. Anything else would just delay the inevitable. Right now he's uncomfortable but not suffering. If we wait much longer that would change and we won't let that happen.

We brought him home and spent the evening cuddled together. We called the girls and Mama Cheryl and then just tried to soak up the essence of this wonderful creature, trying to make sure we never forget his amber eyes that glow green in some lights and his softest fur. The picture with this post is his last one.

So this morning at 11, we say goodbye to the best shop cat ever. To the best cat, period. Thank you all so much for loving this guy throughout the years and helping with his final struggle. I'm quite sure he knows how much he is loved.

It would be a real comfort if you'd take time to post some of your memories of Mr. Butter. All I know is, whoever's running the Rainbow Bridge is going to have their hands full.

Goodbye, Butter Boy.

Your help would be so appreciated!

It's been almost two months now and I'm starting to settle into my retirement routine. One thing I've started doing is getting out and sourcing eBay inventory. I've been selling there since 1999 and, naturally, N2N was where I found the majority of my inventory. Now, it's time to broaden my horizons and as I come across bargains and "why bothers?" I'll let you know.

Here's the first installment: Rabbittown Salvage.

On two occasions, Yorgo has confused his bed with his toys, leading him to completely shred some very expensive cushions. We gave up and decided he'd just have to make do with napping in his crate where, so far at least, he hasn't tried to destroy the bedding. I felt bad because he and the cats really seemed to enjoy chilling together. So when I saw this bed at Rabbittown Salvage for less than the price of a dog toy (13.00) I jumped on it. They also have an even larger one, but I didn't think to get the price.

So far, so good. There's been one beast or more snoozing on it ever since I brought it home.

Rabbittown is one of those strange places where your reaction is, "Wow! I can't believe the bargains!" or "Hmmm...I can get this for less at Walmart." so keep that in mind and look at everything independently.

Also, some marketing genius has set up a series of tables full of all sorts of goodies. With a $20 purchase, you can pick out 5 for free. They know me well.

Here are three of the treats I got yesterday: a Minions dog collar, a multi-purpose tool, and a really nice notepad (I also got a couple of small gifts for my girls so I'm not revealing those.)

All in all, one of the best shopping days in recent memory.

In one short week, these three worked a miracle. Rachel and Sam came from Charlotte with Sam's truck and Arthur hooked his trailer up to it and they proceeded to make countless dump, compactor site, recycling, and donation runs. I pity the fool who makes a comment around me about how "Kids these days just don't know how to work." It won't be pretty. For four days they did nothing BUT work. They gave up their holiday off-time to do this for us and my gratitude to them has no limits.

So many of you have asked about Mr. Butter and the feral cats behind the shop so here's an update:

Mr. Butter came to his new home a few days ago. He's camped out in a cozy bathroom with two of his beds, his litter box from the shop, and all his food and treats. He's been surprisingly chill. He's super-receptive to petting and belly rubs and he's done more purring than I've heard in a long time. The first night home he slept in his litter box and that was a big concern for me but he hasn't done it since. He spends a lot of time in the bed Janet Morely crafted from a N2N sweatshirt.

A gate separates him from the other family pets. He can hear them but he hasn't shown a lot of concern- no hissing or fluffing up. Yesterday we opened the bathroom door so he can get a look at the cats and dog on the other side of the gate and come across the hall to our bedroom if he likes. So far he hasn't liked.

The cats and dog have shown some interest but mostly they just want to get back in our bedroom.

It's a slow process but so far my only concern is that he's not eating much. If it doesn't improve in a few days, we may take him for a check-up. We'll see...

The Next to New Sterile Ferals- Community Cats at the shop are okay. A wonderful lady from the neighborhood is coming by daily to feed them. She texts me a cat emoji after she does.

I changed out the straw in their shelters before I left. Maybe they won't be too cold when this arctic blast comes through.

If anyone would like to help, they eat 9 Lives Plus Care. The shop, of course, is closed but you can have it sent to me. Message me for the address. Thanks for all your years of care and concern for these guys.

That's it so far. There will, of course, be more updates. Stay tuned and Happy New Year!!

A final goodbye. It's been a privilege and a delight to serve you all.

It's here. Our last day. It's been 13,552 days since we opened Next to New with $3000 and a dream of having a fun place where people could recycle their wardrobes and clothe their children while still having money left for the things that matter: books, family trips, good movies, and ice cream.

In the last 37 years, we've had so much fun and some heartbreaking losses. We've seen each other through tough times and a plague. We've celebrated graduations and marriages (and a few divorces.) We've watched babies grow from toddlers to lanky middle schoolers to college kids to ultimately become parents themselves. And they've all come back to N2N for the bargains and because, like them in years past, their kids want to go to the place with the "little house."

Yesterday the little house went to its new home. That's when it all became real.

I'll have lots more to say later, but right now just know Cheryl, Arthur, and I will be at N2N today at 10, for one last time. I know you're busy with final Christmas preparations but I hope you'll make time to swing by and see us. There are still treasures to be found in the $1.00 and $.50 racks and we're here, as always, to help you find them.

Love you all so much,
