Kadai Display Pedestal
Early Shōwa Period, c. 1930s

Large sculptural Japanese kadai (display pedestal) carved from a single massive section of solid sugi cedar (or Japanese zelkova). Its deeply grooved core, irregular organic profile, and exceptional weight give the piece a monumental, almost architectural presence, in our booth this week.

Traditionally used to elevate valuable ceramics, flower vases, or precious bronzes in a tokonoma alcove. From a longtime Japanese collection in Yamagata Prefecture.

Bronze Shishi Incense Burner
Shōwa Period, c. 1930s–1960s

Cast bronze shishi (guardian lion) incense burner with a removable head concealing the incense chamber, has recently found a new home. Richly developed patina and a robust muscular form highlight the enduring appeal of traditional bronze work. The interior bears a workshop mark and retains traces of historic filler, reflecting its age and original construction.

A few additions to the booth this week (like this indigo/black tsumugi silk haori jacket): pre-owned and unworn apparel, footwear, bags and accessories from Japan and beyond, ranging from archival designer pieces, prototypes/samples to traditional and contemporary everyday wear. Housed in a Shōwa-era wardrobe and available in limited quantities.

Several limited-production pieces found new homes on opening day, so inventory will continue to rotate throughout season only while inventory remains.

Shōwa-era (late 1970s) paulownia wood modular kimono tansu and companion wardrobe armoire (not shown) arriving this week.

Designed for practical clothing storage, the dresser features four slide-out tray drawers that allow garments to be laid flat with minimal folding, helping reduce creasing. Built in traditional modular fashion, each section can be separated for transport and is fitted with concealed locking iron pull handles for easy moving and reconfiguration. All drawers can be secured with integrated iron side locks.

Mino ware tea bowl, late Meiji Period, c. 1870-1890

This hand-thrown tea bowl is an example of an older form of Shino ware, a style of Mino pottery prized for its soft glaze, olive-black accents, and rustic irregular character.

On display this weekend at Kitaguni.

Hokusai's "Great Wave" sold for USD$2.8M at auction this year.

It's difficult to imagine that when Katsushika Hokusai designed this print in the early 1830s, he could have envisioned one of his works selling for millions nearly two centuries later.

While reproductions are everywhere, exceptionally well-preserved original impressions remain among the most sought-after works in Japanese art.

It also makes one wonder what might still be tucked away in attics, closets, old portfolios, and forgotten boxes. Have you ever come across an unexpected find?

Kanadehon Chūshingura
Osaka school woodblock print, Late Edo period, c. 1850s

Scene from Chūshingura, a tale of obligation and consequence of the Forty-Seven Rōnin, depicted in woodblock prints initially designed by Hasegawa Sadanobu I in the late 1830s and published between 1854 and 1860.

Several scenes have already found new homes last month. The remaining prints are presently on view at Kitaguni.
