Pins! Borders! Center measurement!

Long before I became a proficient piecer, I understood the tragedy of bad borders. Because I was a longarmer before I had ten quilts under my piecing belt. And wavy borders were a whole thing.

Now? Measure from center, and both edges you are putting your border on. Take the average. That's your border length. Cut to length! Pin center and ends. Pin every 8 inches or so - depending on how much give you have in your blocks.

Yes, it's tedious to repeat this process, but you will end up with flatter borders and a more square top at the end of the day.

I find that I have to work in a little bit of extra or stretch things a bit no matter how precise things are in the beginning. It's the nature of fabric, scant seams and human handwork. Embrace it!

In the last week, I feel like I have settled into project zen mode. My sewing room has been very accommodating as I tackle three things at once - all tedious in their own right. First, the machine is loaded with a king size quilt I've been doing an overall whimsical design on. Second, a throw size quilt pattern that is configured as a block of the month, but is more like sections where I am learning new techniques (freezer paper??) and utilizing mom-taxi downtime for hand applique. Third, a panel kit set in log cabin blocks. There are 54 blocks.

Bouncing between these three projects helps me make progress without burnout. And I can give them the attention I want without getting frustrated.

Trimming up some blocks last night. It seems like such a little bit, and tedious and when you first start quilting, a waste of time. 17 year old me made my first quilt - an Irish Chain - and never trimmed a single block. And no corners matched and I ended up losing some edges and it's *rustic* and *homey*. Which - don't get me wrong - are admirable in themselves. It's an effort. But as I have matured as a person and a quilter - I've come to appreciate how starting with a good foundation makes everything come together better later. And isn't there some beauty in that? Take the time to trim your blocks. You won't regret it.

Happy Autumn! After getting settled in our new home, I'm considering taking in quilts again. It will be a couple weeks to get the machine tuned in again, but I believe I can squeeze a few in before Christmas! Let me know if you have need of quilting services. 😁

Happy Holidays!

It's been a big year for me and my family. In April we packed up and moved half way across the country. It's been quite an adventure. One of the reasons we gave this move the "Full Send" was the space in our new home.

One of the perks of more space is that...surprise! I will be accepting client quilts again!

I'll post some pics tomorrow - excited to get more of your work under the needle soon. I have missed it!

It is with mixed feelings that I would like to share that I am no longer accepting client quilts.

It's been a decision I have been weighing for quite some time.

I will be continuing to run my Etsy shop with fabric and occasionally stocking completed quilts as I have time.

Thank you so much to my clients that I have been able to serve these few years! It has been a joy to get to know every last one of you and be able to work with you! Quilt on!
