We just built this stock chocolate hat. The finish has been called a Wooly, S**g, and a Grizz. I’ve even heard it called “A workman’s finish.” I was told before that when a Cowboy couldn’t afford a new hat, he would wire brush his old hat to make it look new. We refer to this style as a Rimrock.

I love to build different hats for people. Our customer requested a hat from one of my favorite movies. This is our version of Jason Patric’s Lt. Gatewood hat in “Geronimo.” In the framed picture Robert Duvall, in the same movie, is wearing a hat built by Steve King, the hatter that I apprenticed with in 1994.

We just built this “512 Cattleman” in black. It’s a 7 1/4 and will be sitting on our stock rack til someone scoops it up. This style, which was once considered “your grandpa’s hat,” has come back into fashion. Being in the hat business for over 30 years, I love seeing the Classic styles make a comeback. My new friend Skylar was kind enough to model it for us.

I always like making wide brim hats. My customer requested a “Cool Hand Luke” hat. At my age, I thought of the Paul Newman movie, but when he said a 4 1/2” brim I knew it wasn’t from that movie. Here is the result - a Granite, wide crown Cattleman. The brim is squared off at 9”.
