She Didn’t Want Subtle. She Wanted Impossible.
Every now and then, someone walks into Optical Kitchen with a request that immediately makes you smile.
Not because it’s easy.
Because you know it’s going to be a challenge.
A few months ago, a client sat down at our design table and said something along the lines of:
“I don’t want ordinary. I don’t want elegant. I don’t want understated. I want people across the room to notice my glasses.”
Now that’s a dangerous thing to say to a frame maker.
We started where most custom frame projects begin: shape, proportions, fit, and color. But the conversation quickly turned from colors to materials.
Gold.
Not gold-colored.
Not gold-plated.
Gold.
The idea was simple in theory: create a crystal-clear frame with gold suspended inside it, as though the metal was floating in air.
The ex*****on was another story entirely.

The Search for the Right Gold
Most decorative metallic effects in eyewear are printed, painted, plated, or laminated from pre-made materials.
Those options weren’t going to cut it.
If we were going to do this, we wanted the real thing.
So we sourced genuine 24-karat gold leaf.
Gold leaf is an incredible material. It is hammered so thin that light almost passes through it. A stack of hundreds of sheets is barely thicker than a business card.
It’s also maddening to work with.
A slight breath can move it.
A fingertip can tear it.
Static electricity can send it floating across the room.
Which, of course, made us want to use it even more.

Trapping Gold in Mid-Air
The goal wasn’t to cover the frame in gold.
The goal was to make the gold appear suspended inside the acetate itself.
To do that, individual sheets of gold leaf were carefully arranged between layers of crystal-clear cellulose acetate.
Then came the nerve-racking part.
Heat.
Pressure.
Timing.
Too much pressure and the gold would distort.
Too much heat and the appearance would change.
Too little of either and the layers would never become a single solid plate.
Somewhere between art project, chemistry experiment, and controlled panic, the layers fused together.
When the plate emerged, the gold wasn’t sitting on the surface.
It wasn’t trapped behind a window.
It was floating inside the material itself.
As the frame moves through light, the gold catches and reflects from different depths within the acetate. One moment it appears delicate and translucent. The next, it flashes like jewelry.
Exactly what we were hoping for.

The Temple Core Nobody Sees—Until They Do
Most people focus on the front of a frame.
Frame makers know the details are often hidden elsewhere.
For this project we paired the floating gold acetate with an ornate gold-tone filigree temple core.
Normally a temple core lives a secret life buried inside opaque acetate where nobody ever sees it.
But when surrounded by crystal-clear material, every detail becomes visible.
The engraved scrollwork, geometric patterns, and decorative flourishes suddenly become part of the design.
It’s like discovering the movement inside a luxury watch.
The closer you look, the more there is to see.

The Final Result
The finished frame is unapologetically extravagant.
Clear acetate.
Genuine 24-karat gold leaf suspended throughout.
Decorative gold filigree cores visible through every angle.
A piece that sits somewhere between eyewear, jewelry, and sculpture.
And that’s exactly why we love making custom frames.
Nobody would ever manufacture this for a catalog.
No focus group would approve it.
No corporate design committee would sign off on floating gold leaf because it’s too complicated, too time-consuming, and too unpredictable.
But when you’re making a frame for one specific person instead of thousands, those rules disappear.
The question isn’t:
“Will everyone like it?”
The question is:
“Will the person who dreamed it up love it?”
When she put them on for the first time, she smiled before she even looked in the mirror.
That’s usually how we know we’ve gotten it right.
Sometimes the best eyewear isn’t subtle.
Sometimes it doesn’t whisper.
Sometimes it arrives wearing 24-karat gold and announces itself the moment it enters the room.
And honestly?
We’re perfectly okay with that.
